Games for Gamer Parents to Play With Their Kids: How to Choose

Choose a game to share with your child by starting with the play style, then checking multiplayer, compatibility, ratings, and family controls.

The best game to share with your child depends on what you want to do together: build freely, cooperate toward a goal, compete in quick rounds, or help them learn a game at their pace. Minecraft is one well-documented option for creative play and family multiplayer, but the right fit also depends on your child, the platform and edition, how multiplayer works, and the game’s rating.

Choose the kind of play you want to share

Start with the experience, not a “best games” ranking. A child who loves making things may enjoy an open-ended world; another may prefer clear goals, short competitive rounds, or a parent alongside them while they learn. A game can be enjoyable together without requiring equal skill: you might take turns, let your child lead, or handle a tricky section as a team.

  • Open-ended building: Create and explore without needing to follow a fixed sequence of objectives.
  • Structured cooperation: Work together toward goals. Check that the specific game supports the kind of co-op you want.
  • Party competition: Play short rounds against one another or as a group; consider whether losing feels fun for your child.
  • Parent-assisted play: Choose something your child can learn at a comfortable pace, with room for you to help when needed.

These are ways to sort options, not a claim that every game has been checked against each category. Verify a candidate’s current features, age rating, and platform details before buying.

Minecraft: a flexible starting point

Creative or Survival mode

Mojang describes Minecraft as a block-based, expanding 3D world without fixed goals. Players choose how to spend their time. Creative mode focuses on building, while Survival mode emphasizes survival mechanics. That flexibility can make it easier for a parent and child to set their own shared project or play at different paces. Mojang’s parent guide to Minecraft also describes multiplayer as a way for families to connect through couch co-op or play from a distance.

Match editions before planning multiplayer

Minecraft Java Edition is available on PC, Mac, and Linux. Bedrock Edition is available across platforms including Windows, Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and mobile. Java and Bedrock players cannot play together, so confirm which edition each person has before setting up a shared game. The ESRB’s Minecraft guide also advises parents to monitor the servers children join. Private Minecraft Realms are described there as a way to approve who can enter; check current support and account settings before relying on that option.

Consider the rating in your region

Mojang lists recommended ratings of PEGI 7 and ESRB Everyone 10+ for Minecraft. Rating systems differ by region, and a rating is a starting point rather than a decision for every family. Read the local rating record and descriptors, then consider your individual child. The Mojang parent guide provides the publisher’s rating information.

Check how multiplayer works on your system

“Multiplayer” does not necessarily mean everyone can play together on one screen. Check whether the game supports same-system local play, online play, or both, and confirm the player limit for the exact game and platform. For Nintendo Switch and Switch 2, Nintendo explains that local multiplayer can use one compatible system, but features vary by game and extra controllers may be needed for the number of players. Its family gaming guide is a useful starting point; check the individual game’s listing and console requirements too.

  • Confirm the number of players supported in the mode you plan to use.
  • Check whether players share one screen or need separate systems and accounts.
  • For online play, check whether the game requires an account, subscription, or internet connection.
  • Count the compatible controllers you already own. Nintendo notes that some multiplayer modes require additional games, systems, or accessories, which may be sold separately; requirements depend on the title.

Set up family safeguards before play

Use the platform’s family settings and the game’s own controls to manage what is appropriate for your household. The ESRB says parental controls can block games by rating, limit play time, control spending, and restrict online communication. It identifies setting up child accounts as an important first step. See the ESRB guide to parental controls for the controls it describes.

  • POP-O-MATIC BUBBLE: In this beloved children's board game, players press and pop the plastic bubble to roll the die. The iconic Pop-o-Matic die roller is fun to press, and it keeps the die from getting lost
  • BOARD GAMES FOR FAMILY: Adults and kids can play this family board game together. It's a fun indoor game for playdates and a great choice for Family Game Night

Rules can reflect a child’s age and maturity, rather than applying the same settings to every family. The ESRB Family Gaming Guide offers age-banded suggestions and recommends separate accounts for children in households with multiple children. For any online game, review who can contact your child and which players or servers they can join.

A quick checklist before choosing a game

  1. Pick the shared activity: building, cooperation, competition, or learning together.
  2. Check the exact game and mode: confirm local or online play, player count, and whether everyone can join on the same system.
  3. Match platforms and editions: verify compatibility for every family member; do not assume different editions can play together.
  4. Check practical requirements: identify needed accounts, controllers, systems, subscriptions, and accessories.
  5. Review the local rating and descriptors: make the decision based on your child and your household’s comfort.
  6. Set up child accounts and controls: decide in advance how you will handle communication, spending, and play time.
