What happened to Aziza Barnes?
TheWrap reported on December 21, 2024, that Barnes had died six days earlier, citing a statement from their family. The outlet attributed the cause of death to suicide. No further circumstances were provided in that report, and there is no basis here to speculate about them.
In the family statement reproduced by TheWrap, Barnes’s parents called them “an undeniable and beloved artist, child, sibling, and friend” and wrote that Barnes had touched and inspired people in their community and industry. They said Barnes would be “deeply missed and endlessly loved.” TheWrap’s report includes the full statement.
What was Barnes’s connection to the Game of Thrones spinoff?
Barnes was part of the creative team for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO’s series set in the Game of Thrones world. The official series crew page lists Barnes as both a writer and an executive producer.

The crew listing establishes those roles, but does not identify which episodes Barnes wrote. HBO announced a six-episode season debuting January 18; that announcement alone does not establish the show’s current streaming availability. HBO’s announcement gives the season and debut-date details.

Poetry
Barnes also wrote i be but i ain’t, a poetry collection. In remarks quoted by TheWrap, Barnes described poems about their body and the ways it was gendered and treated in different spaces. “There are many poems about my own body, about how I want to alter my body/about the decay of my body,” Barnes said. They added that, once the book was in the world, writing about “my breasts, my ovaries, how my body is gendered & misgendered & mishandled in spaces” felt permanent.
Playwriting
Barnes’s work also included playwriting. Taken together, their poetry, theatre and television writing show a career that moved across forms rather than being defined only by the high-profile series credit.
