Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a free-to-play action RPG from Netmarble Neo, but it includes in-app purchases. Its full release was May 21, 2025, so it is not a new release today. Players praised some parts of its atmosphere and combat at launch, while reporting concerns about monetization, progression, and limited co-op.
What is Game of Thrones: Kingsroad?
Game of Thrones: Kingsroad is a story-driven action RPG set in the world of Game of Thrones, developed by Netmarble Neo and published by Netmarble. Players create a hero, visit locations including Winterfell and King’s Landing, and follow a new story. Steam lists single-player and online co-op features. Steam Support’s listing also classifies it as an action, adventure, and RPG title.
Is Game of Thrones: Kingsroad free to play?
Yes. Netmarble announced that the game would be free to play at official launch, and Steam lists in-app purchases. Free access therefore does not mean that every item or progression option is free. The sources cited here do not establish the current prices or full contents of its purchases. Netmarble’s launch announcement and Steam Support confirm the free-to-play and in-app-purchase model.
Why did players criticize Kingsroad at launch?
A May 22, 2025, Notebookcheck report described a mixed launch response. It highlighted praise for the atmosphere, soundtrack, responsive blocking and dodging, quests, and amount of content. The same article relayed player complaints about several aspects of the game:

- Presentation and variety: Players cited dated graphics, limited character customization, and NPCs that looked too similar.
- Difficulty: Some players reported midgame difficulty spikes.
These are complaints reported around the May 2025 launch, not a verified description of the current build. The sources cited here do not establish whether later updates addressed them.
What did the May 2025 review snapshot show?
Notebookcheck cited SteamDB figures of 63% positive among more than 1,100 Steam reviews and a launch-day peak of more than 3,100 concurrent players.
