HBO has renewed House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms through 2028, but the promised kinds of stories are very different. House of the Dragon is building toward the Battle of the Gullet, a major naval-and-dragon set piece; Knight follows a hedge knight and his young squire in a deliberately smaller, more personal tale. A third Targaryen-line project was teased in 2025, but the cited reporting does not identify it or establish that HBO ordered it.
What HBO has confirmed for its Game of Thrones future
Warner Bros. Discovery announced that both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms had been renewed, extending the two series through 2028. The announcement described a yearly cadence of Game of Thrones-universe programming. That is a commitment to these two continuing shows, not confirmation that every year will bring a new series or that an additional Targaryen project has been commissioned.
| Series or project | What is established | Scale and focus |
|---|---|---|
| House of the Dragon | Renewed through 2028; adapts George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood and is set roughly 200 years before Game of Thrones. | Ruling-family conflict, dragons, and large-scale battles. |
| A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms | Renewed through 2028; based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas. | A hedge knight and his squire, with a more intimate, character-centered story. |
| Unnamed Targaryen-line idea | Described in reported remarks in February 2025 as “very promising”; its identity and status are not established by that reporting. | Not stated in the cited reporting. |
Where the big battles fit: House of the Dragon
The battle hook belongs to House of the Dragon. In a June 2026 interview, showrunner Ryan Condal discussed the Battle of the Gullet, a large confrontation involving naval combat, dragons, and medieval fighting. He described the challenge of producing it for television as “the most insane thing that I’ve ever seen in my history as a TV producer and being allowed to do it.” Condal said the sequence was intended to function both as an intimate character event and as spectacle.
That interview makes clear why the Gullet is a major production undertaking, but it is not a release-date announcement. The cited material does not establish when the battle will appear on screen.

Why A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a different kind of prequel
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms adapts Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Its first season follows the first novella, The Hedge Knight, across six episodes, according to TIME’s January 2026 account. Egg is Prince Aegon V Targaryen, but the story is centered on his travels with Ser Duncan the Tall rather than on a war between ruling factions.
Martin captured the contrast in scale in comments quoted by TIME: “This doesn’t have any dragons or big battles.” He added, “It has a field and a lot of tents and some horses.” Showrunner Ira Parker described the same stripped-back approach as “Game of Thrones without all the stuff.” The Associated Press reported in June 2026 that the second season continues that smaller-scale approach.

Readers who want the story behind the adaptation can look for the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, beginning with The Hedge Knight. Editions and availability vary; the screen adaptation’s source relationship is the relevant connection, not a particular edition.

In February 2025, a Gizmodo recap of comments by HBO drama chief Francesca Orsi reported that she had teased an unnamed “very promising” project still in the Targaryen line. The recap does not name the project or establish that HBO formally ordered it. It therefore supports describing an idea or project as teased, not calling it a confirmed new series, assigning it a title, or predicting a release date.

There is a separate creative comment that should not be confused with that tease. In a June 2026 interview, Condal said he personally found it interesting to explore a period when Targaryens still ruled but no longer had dragons. His stated interest does not identify Orsi’s unnamed project or show that HBO approved such a series.

How to read the slate: certainty versus speculation
- Officially renewed: House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are the two continuing series identified in HBO/WBD’s renewal announcement, with both extended through 2028.
- Discussed as a story and production set piece: The Battle of the Gullet is associated with House of the Dragon; Condal’s interview explains its intended scale, not its air date.
- Reported tease, not a confirmed order: The unnamed Targaryen-line project comes from Orsi’s reported February 2025 remarks. The reporting cited here does not reveal its identity or current status.
- Showrunner’s personal interest: Condal’s idea about Targaryens ruling without dragons is not evidence that this concept is the teased project or that it is in production.
