Galactus’s brief appearance at Marvel Studios’ July 27, 2024, San Diego Comic-Con panel was the closing beat of a concept reel—not a scene from the finished film. The giant’s eyes and temples filled the broad windows of an office as he peered inside, giving Hall H a glimpse of the scale and retro-futurist mood planned for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.
What the audience saw
Director Matt Shakman introduced a pre-visualization clip designed to convey the film’s tone. Styled like an archival newsreel, it moved through images of the team in astronaut gear, Reed Richards in a classroom, a rocket launch and the Fantasticar. Its final image was a giant figure looking through the open windows of an office building. TheWrap’s report describes the figure’s eyes and temples filling the windows, and called it the audience’s first glimpse of what appeared to be MCU Galactus. TheWrap’s July 27, 2024, account provides the detailed shot description.
It was a quick visual reveal, not a complete character introduction or a finished movie sequence. Variety also described the ending as Galactus appearing in a concept reel, corroborating the distinction between the panel presentation and final footage. Variety’s July 29, 2024, report covered the reel and the panel’s retro-1960s direction.
Why the reel looked retro-futurist
The clip’s newsreel styling and images of rockets, classrooms and space-age machinery fit the film’s alternate 1960s visual approach. Shakman described that direction onstage: “We’re doing a retro-future ’60s. Syd Mead was an inspiration. The ’60s, to me, is all about optimism.” The quote is from the director’s remarks at the SDCC panel, as reported by Variety on July 29, 2024.

A comic starting point for Galactus
Readers who want to explore Galactus’s classic Fantastic Four story can start with Fantastic Four #48, the opening chapter of the Galactus Trilogy. Marvel’s official page for the 2025 Facsimile Edition says it reprints the 1961 issue, written by Stan Lee and pencilled by Jack Kirby. The panel reel’s brief glimpse does not establish that the film adapts this comic directly.
Marvel identifies Fantastic Four #50 as the trilogy’s conclusion on its official issue page. These issue pages establish the comic reading context; they do not verify the contents or availability of a collected edition.
