Gajraj Rao has said he does not object to being cast as a father; he objects to playing the same father again and again. For him, each role needs its own “universe”—a distinct family, temperament and set of everyday problems. That idea helps explain the contrast between his genial father in Badhaai Ho, his less tolerant father in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, and Kashiram Narayan, the family patriarch he played in the 2020 comedy series PariWar.
Why Rao wants each father role to feel different
After Badhaai Ho (2018) brought him broad recognition, Rao said he turned down scripts that simply repeated that character. His concern was not that a role involved fatherhood, but that the character’s family life and conflicts should not feel interchangeable with those he had already played.
“There is nothing wrong in being a father, but the universe needs to be different each time, the problems and the day-to-day life need to be different,” Rao told Scroll in 2020. The distinction is visible in the roles he discussed: the genial father in Badhaai Ho is not the less tolerant father he played in Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan. The label “father” may recur; the personality and pressure points should change.
Why he accepted PariWar
In PariWar, Rao played Kashiram Narayan, patriarch of a family pulled into disputes over property and inheritance. The series gave him another father-and-family setting, but its central conflict was a property fight rather than a retread of the situations associated with Badhaai Ho.

Rao said the script appealed to him and that he was keen to work with director Sagar Ballary, known for Bheja Fry. “The script for PariWar too is very funny and interesting,” he told Scroll. Contemporary coverage also described the show as a family entertainer. The director’s surname was spelled “Ballary” in Scroll’s interview and “Bellary” in some other contemporaneous reports, including The Indian Express.
What PariWar was at launch
PariWar was reported as a six-part Hindi comedy series produced by Arre Studio and directed by Sagar Ballary (also rendered as Bellary in contemporaneous coverage). It was announced for release on Disney+ Hotstar on September 23, 2020, according to The Telegraph and other launch-era reporting. Those details describe the original release; they do not establish whether the series is currently available in any particular country or catalog.

In a separate interview with The Telegraph, Rao acknowledged that father roles were a substantial part of the work available to him. “If I start complaining, ‘Please don’t come to me with roles which is that of a 55-year-old or 60-year-old father’, then 95 per cent of work will stop coming to me.” The 95 per cent figure was his rhetorical estimate, not an industry measurement. His point is less about rejecting a category than about seeking variety within it.
Rao’s path to screen work also included a break from acting. Scroll’s account says he stepped away from acting between 2008 and 2015 to focus on Code Red Films, the advertising agency he had co-founded, and returned to screen work with Talvar. In the same interview, he described drawing on observation and memory to build characters. A PTI-based Indian Express report quotes him on preparing from a heavily annotated script: “My script is full of notes, it’s more precious than my life when I’m working.”
