What is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga about?
The 2024 Australian film is a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, tracing Furiosa’s path from the Green Place of Many Mothers into the Wasteland. After she is taken by Dementus and his biker horde, she is caught in the conflict between Dementus and Immortan Joe while trying to find her way home. The film is directed by George Miller, who co-wrote it with Nico Lathouris. The premise turns a tightly focused road chase into a multi-stage account of survival and transformation. That gives the setting more room to breathe, but it also means the film spends substantial time on Furiosa’s earlier life before reaching the adult figure audiences know from Fury Road.

Pacing and structure
Fury Road is built around relentless forward motion; Furiosa is more interested in the years and ordeals that shape its protagonist. The broader structure supports a sense of epic scale, but it can make the story feel less urgent. Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy found the prequel less propulsive than Fury Road and argued that adult Furiosa arrives late and remains comparatively passive for a substantial stretch. Character and world
The expanded timeline is the film’s central trade-off. It can make Furiosa’s transformation feel like the product of accumulated hardship rather than a single defining chase, while also giving the Wasteland’s rival powers and harsh conditions a larger role. Viewers looking for a character-led origin may value that scope; those who chiefly want the concentrated momentum of Fury Road may find the detours costly.
Action and craft
The scale of the ordeal is part of the film’s appeal, and Kennedy’s review recognizes its scale and craft even as he criticizes its pace. The contrast with Fury Road is less about whether the prequel belongs in the same world than about what it prioritizes: a prolonged account of how Furiosa gets there instead of a story driven almost entirely by immediate pursuit.
Do you need to watch Fury Road first?
No. The prequel introduces Furiosa’s earlier circumstances and can be followed as an origin story. Watching Fury Road first adds context for the adult character and makes the prequel’s destination clearer, but it is not required to understand the basic conflict. If you are new to the series, either order works; choose Fury Road first for a sharper introduction to the franchise’s high-speed style, or Furiosa first to follow the character chronologically.
How long is the film, and what content should viewers know about?
