The first reviews of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga praised George Miller’s action craft, Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance and the film’s visual scale—but they did not agree that the prequel matches Mad Max: Fury Road. The central divide was whether its broader, slower origin-story shape adds depth to Furiosa’s story or blunts the relentless momentum that made its predecessor distinctive.
What is Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga about?
George Miller’s film follows Furiosa before the events of Mad Max: Fury Road. In the official synopsis, young Furiosa is taken from the Green Place and falls into the hands of Dementus and his biker horde. Her path brings her to the Citadel, ruled by Immortan Joe, as she tries to survive and find her way home. Anya Taylor-Joy plays Furiosa, Chris Hemsworth plays Dementus, and Tom Burke is also among the principal cast. The film was written by Miller and Nico Lathouris. The Festival de Cannes announcement describes its premise and cast.
The film received an out-of-competition gala screening at Cannes on May 15, 2024. The festival announcement listed May 22, 2024, for its French theatrical release and May 24, 2024, for its U.S. theatrical release.
What did critics praise in the first reviews?
Reviewers singled out the scale and execution of the action: stunts, effects, and Miller’s command of large set pieces. In its May 15, 2024 roundup, Rotten Tomatoes’ first-reviews article quoted Empire’s John Nugent praising “an astonishing standard of stunts and visual effects” across the film. Nugent also wrote, “Taylor-Joy, in particular, is phenomenal.”

Hemsworth’s performance as Dementus was another point of praise. The film’s visual ambition and the energy of its action found admirers even among reviewers who thought it fell short of Fury Road. The early response was favorable overall, but the praise did not amount to consensus that this prequel was an equal—or a better—film.
Why did some reviewers find it less effective than Fury Road?
The main reservation was comparative: Fury Road is built around sustained chase momentum, while Furiosa covers a longer stretch of its protagonist’s life and gives more room to backstory and world-building. Some critics found that broader shape less fluid, less tightly propelled, or less distinctive. Others questioned whether revisiting Furiosa’s origins added enough to justify the prequel.

Hannah Strong of Little White Lies captured both sides in the first-review roundup: “The stunt set pieces are exhilarating and inventive, if not quite as awe-inspiring as those in Fury Road.” Variety’s Owen Gleiberman was more skeptical, calling it “one that, to me, falls very short of being a Mad Max home run.” These are substantial reservations, not evidence of a uniformly enthusiastic response.
Does the origin-story approach work on its own terms?
Some contemporaneous reviews argued that the change in scale and pace is part of the point. Empire’s John Nugent described the film as a “rich, sprawling epic” that expands the series’ mythology. Consequence’s Liz Shannon Miller called Furiosa and Fury Road “two pieces of the same puzzle, different in their scope but connected not just by characters, but by ethos and aesthetic.”

The Atlantic’s David Sims emphasized the film’s restraint and its different rhythm from the extended chase structure of Fury Road. TIME’s Stephanie Zacharek, by contrast, took a more skeptical view of how the spectacle relates to the film’s vision. Read together, these reviews suggest a useful way to judge the prequel: does the additional history make Furiosa’s journey and the larger world more meaningful, or does it dilute the force of the action? Critics answered differently. Metacritic’s critic-review listings, TIME’s review, and The Atlantic’s review provide those contrasting contemporaneous perspectives.
