Funimation’s app and website shut down on April 2, 2024. Crunchyroll is the successor for much of its anime catalog, but the change did not carry over every title, feature, or account entitlement. If you used Funimation, check Crunchyroll for the shows you want and review billing through the service or payment platform that handled your subscription.

When did Funimation shut down?

Crunchyroll ended Funimation’s app and website on April 2, 2024. Nintendo separately confirmed that the Funimation app for Switch was discontinued on the same date. Crunchyroll’s end-of-services notice and Nintendo Support document the closures.

Why was Funimation discontinued?

The shutdown followed the consolidation of Funimation and Crunchyroll under Sony. On March 1, 2022, Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that Funimation’s library and simulcast content was moving to Crunchyroll as the services were brought together. Sony’s announcement described more than 1,600 hours of content and over 50 newly added titles at that time. Those are figures from 2022, not a count of Crunchyroll’s current catalog.

Did all Funimation shows move to Crunchyroll?

No guarantee of a complete transfer is stated. Crunchyroll says most Funimation content has migrated and advises viewers to check its lineup for updates. Availability can depend on region, so search for the exact series in your country rather than assuming it is there.

Sony’s 2022 announcement described service availability in more than 200 countries and territories and 10 languages. Those figures reflect the announcement at the time; they do not establish present-day availability for a particular title, language, or region.

What happened to Funimation accounts and watch history?

Signing in

Crunchyroll says users who previously signed in with Funimation credentials can continue to access their accounts. It also says this credential sign-in method will be discontinued for people who have not used it, but the support notice does not give an effective date. Check Crunchyroll’s current end-of-services guidance if you still rely on that sign-in method.

Watch history and queue

Watch-history migration from Funimation to Crunchyroll is no longer available, according to the support article. It does not offer a current way to move that history or queue.

Can you still use Funimation digital copies?

No. Crunchyroll says it does not support Funimation digital copies, which were associated with DVD and Blu-ray purchases. Owning or buying a physical edition is a separate way to watch a title if that edition is available; it does not restore or transfer the old digital entitlement.

Is your Funimation subscription still billing you?

Crunchyroll describes automatic subscription transfer as the general rule, but says the outcome varies with payment platform, plan, and region. It notes changes affecting some legacy plan pricing, conversion of a Roku Pay plan, and a currency change for Canadian subscribers. Because billing is account-specific, check the billing settings of the service or third party that charged you.

  • For Google Play, Roku, or Amazon Prime billing, review the subscription through that platform.
  • For other payment methods, check your Crunchyroll account and the payment channel shown on your statements.
  • For remaining annual membership time or a refund after cancellation, follow the options in Crunchyroll’s support notice or contact its support team; available options depend on payment method.

What does Crunchyroll offer former Funimation viewers?

Crunchyroll’s support page describes premium ad-free viewing and offline downloads for Mega-Fan and Ultimate-Fan subscribers. It also describes language options, multiple-device viewing, queues, and watchlists. These are support-page feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every feature, plan, or language is available in every region; check current plan details before subscribing.

Choose based on what you need: whether the specific anime is available where you live, whether you want streaming or a physical edition, whether offline viewing matters, and which subtitle or dub language you prefer. The service transition does not by itself confirm a title’s current catalog listing or subscription price.

What to do next

  1. Search Crunchyroll’s lineup for the exact series and confirm it is available in your region.
  2. Sign in to Crunchyroll with the account method you currently use; if you depended on unused Funimation credentials, review the latest support guidance.
  3. Check the payment platform or account billing page that handled your subscription for active charges, plan details, cancellation, or refund options.
  4. If you are looking for a former Funimation digital copy, check whether a suitable DVD or Blu-ray edition is available; the physical purchase will not reinstate the digital copy.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
