Photographs made just before the Paris 2024 opening ceremony show a full moon behind or beside the Olympic rings suspended from the Eiffel Tower. The available captions point to more than one image, however, and do not establish that the moon was geometrically “inside” the rings. The photographer and date also depend on the specific frame shown.
What the Paris moon photographs show
The setting is the Eiffel Tower, where Olympic rings were displayed for the 2024 Games. In the photographs described by the available captions, the full moon appears behind or near the rings. That supports “behind” or “beside” as a careful description; “inside” should be used only if the particular displayed frame clearly supports that reading.
The images are associated with the days immediately before the opening ceremony, but their captions do not all identify the same date or photographer. They should be treated as separate records rather than combined into one account.
Captions and credits identify different images
| Image record | Date and description | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| AP caption republished by Outlook India | Monday, July 22, 2024. The caption says a full moon rose behind the rings on the Eiffel Tower in Paris; it notes that the opening ceremony was Friday. | AP Photo/David J. Phillip |
| IMAGO Images retrospective | Describes a frame as “The full moon behind the Olympic rings on the Eiffel Tower.” The page was last updated October 15, 2025. | IMAGO / UPI Photo / Paul Hanna |
| Paperblog photo caption | Describes a golden full moon topping Paris on July 21, 2024. The available information does not establish that this is the same frame as either image above. | Wang Zhao |
These records do not establish that all three captions refer to one photograph. For any published image, use the caption and credit attached to that exact frame; do not transfer a photographer’s name or date from one record to another.

How to describe the composition accurately
The wording “inside the rings” is vivid, but the cited descriptions say “behind” or place the moon near the rings; they do not settle the precise geometry. The image itself is the deciding evidence. If the moon visibly sits within the circular outline in the selected crop, “inside” may describe that frame. Otherwise, “behind the Olympic rings” is the wording directly supported by the AP and IMAGO descriptions.
Likewise, a gallery comparing multiple photographs should keep each image’s framing, moon position, date, and agency credit attached to it. Similar subject matter is not proof that the photographs are the same exposure or were made on the same date.
