The series has shown that they can be cruel and that at least one creature, Smiley, returns after an apparent death. But the evidence cited here does not establish what species they are, where they came from, or the full rules behind their return.
What are the creatures in From?
They are human-looking night predators that roam the town and kill its residents after dark. The series sets them among the dangers facing people trapped there, but the available coverage does not give them a definitive species name or explain their ultimate origin. Calling them vampires, wendigos, or another folkloric creature goes beyond what these sources establish.

That scene supports describing the creatures’ treatment of victims as deliberate and psychologically cruel; it does not, by itself, establish a complete account of their motives or intelligence. What does Smiley’s return tell us?
Season 3 connects Fatima’s storyline to the return of Smiley, the creature Boyd killed in Season 2. TheWrap’s 2024 Season 3 coverage reports that Fatima gives birth to Smiley. This makes one point clear: in this story, an apparent death does not necessarily mean a creature is gone for good.

How are the creatures made for the screen?
The visual effects work treats the creatures as designed performances, not merely frightening shapes. In a 2024 breakdown, Computer Graphics World reports on WeFX’s work, identifying Ryan Ng as visual effects supervisor and Cesar Dacol Jr. as head of creature development. The article describes the Kimono Woman’s design as balancing elegance with menace and says the team used FACS to capture nuanced facial expressions.

Ng said, “The goal was to make these creatures feel alive, deeply rooted in anatomical realism.” Dacol described the challenge of designing the Kimono Woman: “Female faces are inherently more delicate,” he said. “Maintaining that subtlety while making her monstrous was a fine line to walk.”
