According to her authorized biography, Usha Uthup’s turning point came in Calcutta in 1969: while singing at Trincas, she acknowledged to her husband, Ramu, that she returned Jani Chacko Uthup’s love. The intimate scene is narrated in a book excerpt, not established by an independently recorded transcript.
What happened in Calcutta, according to the biography?
The episode appears in Scroll’s 2 March 2022 excerpt from The Queen of Indian Pop: The Authorised Biography of Usha Uthup, written by Vikas Kumar Jha and translated from Hindi by Srishti Jha. The book places the events in 1969 and portrays Usha as already troubled by the state of her five-year marriage to Ramu.
Two visits to Trincas
In July, the excerpt says, Usha received a three-week contract to sing at Trincas in Calcutta and travelled there with Ramu. Toward the end of the year, she received another invitation. This time Ramu did not accompany her, and she returned to Calcutta alone.
Jani’s declaration and Usha’s answer
The biography recounts that Usha and Jani Chacko Uthup saw each other regularly around her performances. In its account of a conversation with Ramu, Jani says, “I don’t know about Usha and her feelings, but I am in love with your wife.” The book then says Ramu asked Usha whether she felt the same. Her answer, as rendered in the excerpt, was “Yes!”
#1 Best Overall
The biography presents that exchange as the moment Usha acknowledged her feelings and confronted the end of her first marriage. Its dialogue and account of the couple’s private thoughts should be understood as the book’s narrative, rather than as a separately verified recording or transcript.
Why did Usha choose to build a life in Kolkata?
In a 2022 interview with the Khaleej Times, Uthup said she chose to live in Kolkata because Jani was based there. She explained that he worked for J Thomas & Co., was transferred to Cochin, where their children were born, and returned to Kolkata in 1976. She said she had lived in the city since then, and described it as a “magical place.”
Rank #2
That later first-person account helps explain Kolkata’s lasting importance to Uthup, but it is distinct from the biography’s description of the 1969 encounters. The interview does not independently verify the private conversation with Ramu.
What Uthup said about the biography
In the same interview, Uthup described the book as a Hindi biography by Vikas Kumar Jha translated into English by his daughter, Srishti Jha. When asked about the memoir’s truthfulness, she replied, “Oh! I’ve been truthful, and honest.” She was speaking about her participation in the book; that remark is not an independent certification of every reconstructed scene or quotation.

Where the story is reported elsewhere
An Onmanorama report published in 2024 also summarizes Jani’s confession to Ramu, explicitly attributing the account to Jha’s authorized biography. It shows that the episode has been reported beyond the excerpt, but it is not independent confirmation of the private exchange.
