Robbie Dolan moved from a televised singing competition to one of Australia’s biggest racing stages: after reaching the quarterfinals of The Voice in 2022, he rode Knight’s Choice to victory in the Melbourne Cup on 5 November 2024.
Robbie Dolan’s run on The Voice
Dolan competed on the Australian singing competition in 2022 and reached its quarterfinals. PerthNow reported that he was eliminated before the semifinals after performing Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball.” The reported result marks the end of his run on the show; it does not establish how he felt privately about the elimination.
Two years later, Dolan was in the spotlight for a different reason—as a jockey in the Melbourne Cup.
How Dolan won the 2024 Melbourne Cup
On 5 November 2024, Dolan rode Knight’s Choice to win the 164th Lexus Melbourne Cup at Flemington. The Victoria Racing Club records the race as a Group 1 over 3200 metres, with $8.56 million in prize money. A photo finish with Warp Speed
Knight’s Choice beat Warp Speed in a close finish. PerthNow described the winning margin as a half-head, while ABC News called it a photo finish. The narrow result made Dolan’s Cup victory an especially dramatic conclusion to the race.
Dolan’s reaction after the win
Speaking to Channel Nine after the race, Dolan said, “Pinch me, I’m dreaming,” according to ABC News.
Rank #2
The sequence is striking: a quarterfinal exit on The Voice in 2022, followed by a Melbourne Cup triumph in 2024. The two events make an unlikely pairing in Dolan’s story, without suggesting that one led to or predicted the other.
