From sea to suburbia was a National Archives of Australia photographic exhibition about Western Australia, drawing on government photographs made from the late 1940s to the early 1980s. Its announced exhibition at the Archives’ Western Australia Office in Northbridge closed on 28 November 2025.

What was the exhibition?

From sea to suburbia presented photographs by Australian government photographers travelling across Western Australia. The National Archives described the exhibition as a portrait of the state’s changing identity and four decades of its people, places and everyday life.

The title captures the breadth of the material: the photographs ranged across coastal and inland locations, and documented both ordinary routines and places the Archives described as iconic. The exhibition announcement also framed some images as showing changing attitudes to the environment and urban development. That is the Archives’ description of the exhibition, rather than a claim that every photograph addressed those subjects.

What years and places did it cover?

The Archives dates the photographs to the late 1940s through the early 1980s. This is more precise than reading “from 1940 onwards” as the exhibition’s exact date range: its announcement does not say the photographs began in 1940.

The geographic sweep included Western Australia from the Kimberley to Esperance and Perth to Kalgoorlie. Examples named in the announcement include pearling crews in Broome, migrant timber-worker camps in Pemberton and miners on the Golden Mile. The landscapes spanned outback, forest, coast and suburbia.

What did the photographs document?

The exhibition brought together scenes of work, settlement, landscape and daily life. Its examples place people in distinct settings: pearling crews in Broome, timber workers in Pemberton and miners on the Golden Mile. Alongside such work, the collection’s statewide reach connected coastal, forest, urban and inland environments.

Co-curator Kellie Abbott described the photographs as depicting “our way of life in an era spanning 40 years from the end of the Second World War.” Abbott also said government photographers covered the state “documenting the extraordinary and the everyday.” These statements explain the curatorial emphasis; they do not establish a complete inventory of the photographs shown.

Where was it, and can it still be visited?

The exhibition was announced for the National Archives of Australia’s Western Australia Office in Northbridge. The Archives’ 14 May 2025 announcement said it would close on 28 November 2025, so that published run has ended. The announcement does not establish whether the exhibition later toured or whether a complete online version is available.
