He has framed his recovery as a reason to speak openly so others facing similar struggles feel less alone—not as a simple explanation for his later success.
What Chris Olsen has said about getting sober at 19
Olsen’s public account places his drinking problem in his late teens, amid a difficult period for his family. In a 2023 Elite Daily profile, he described trying to find his footing while his parents were divorcing and his mother was in rehab. He said seeing her recovery made his own feel less unknowable: “Everyone feels like, when they’re in addiction, they’re going through it alone, so [it helped] to know I wasn’t.”
A February 2026 episode description for Great Company with Jamie Laing says Olsen got sober at 19, before he had ever had a legal drink, and recounts an intervention that presented him with a choice between his family and alcohol. That is the show’s summary of its conversation with Olsen, rather than independent clinical documentation.
Olsen has also spoken about the experience in terms of vulnerability. In an interview with Numéro Netherlands, he said: “I think having gone through rehab and getting sober at 19 taught me that being vulnerable is the only way to be authentic.” He has connected sharing those experiences with helping people in similar situations feel less alone.

What is—and is not—known about his rehab experience
An E! News report from December 2022 recounts Olsen’s description of strict practices at the facility, including shame-focused group exercises and an incident involving phone accountability. The report also quotes him recalling a claim that the facility had “maybe… the highest sobriety success rate in the country,” but he immediately said he did not know whether it was true and that it was “just what we heard.” No verified success-rate statistic is established by that account, so the claim should not be treated as a fact about the facility.
How a musical-theater student started posting on TikTok
Before his videos drew a broad audience, Olsen had a performing-arts background. Elite Daily reports that he grew up performing, attended theater programs and earned a BFA in musical theater at Berklee College of Music. Numéro Netherlands says he was a Berklee junior when pandemic isolation prompted him to start posting videos as a creative outlet.

His early TikTok videos included his then-partner Ian Paget. Elite Daily describes a shift toward solo content after the pair’s public split in early 2022. The available profiles present this as a gradual expansion of his work, not a rise attributable to one viral clip or one celebrity connection.
From TikTok creator to celebrity-facing work
As Olsen’s audience and professional opportunities grew, his work extended beyond collaborative and solo videos. Elite Daily discusses his collaborations with Meghan Trainor, celebrity coffee-delivery videos and ambitions to keep appearing on red carpets while exploring business and hosting work. The same profile described Flight Fuel as his direct-to-consumer coffee venture at the time; its current status is not established here.

| Phase | Format or setting | What the cited accounts establish |
|---|---|---|
| Pandemic-era start | Creative video posts on TikTok | Numéro Netherlands says Olsen began posting while studying musical theater at Berklee and isolated during the pandemic. |
| Early audience-building | Collaborative videos, then solo creator content | Elite Daily describes videos with Ian Paget and a move toward solo content after their public split in early 2022. |
| Broader public profile | Celebrity collaborations, awards coverage and red-carpet appearances | Elite Daily covers celebrity-facing work and red-carpet ambitions; CBS Los Angeles mentions his social-media success and a recent Streamy Awards win, without a date shown on the opened segment page. |
The sources support a broad career arc, but not a complete event-by-event timeline of Olsen’s awards coverage or red-carpet appearances. A 2022 E! story reported that he listed 9.4 million TikTok followers among his accomplishments in a video celebrating five years sober. That is a dated figure from 2022, not a current follower count.

Why he has called the story inspiring
The significance Olsen has publicly attached to recovery is not that rehab guaranteed fame. Rather, he has described sobriety and vulnerability as experiences that shaped how he talks about himself and why he wants people facing similar struggles to feel less isolated. His creative career also drew on a pre-existing interest in performance and developed through multiple formats and collaborations.
A later public reference connects that career to a book: an August 27, 2026 episode page from Barstool Sports identifies Olsen as the author of I Think My Therapist Hates Me and says the conversation covered social-media fame, award shows and rehab. The episode page establishes the title and attribution, but not a particular edition or current retailer availability.
