Who are the coolest superhero girlfriends? This subjective list favors agency, courage, professional skill, and the ability to act independently—not just proximity to a famous hero. It includes characters whose stories show them doing meaningful work of their own, and gives extra credit where a source describes superhero activity. The ranking is editorial, not an official Marvel or DC list. Comic and screen versions can differ, so each entry names the relevant continuity when the evidence does.
The title suggests girlfriends, but its two named characters do not define a full, consistently sourced roster of ten women. Rather than fill the list with unsupported claims, this ranking includes the six partners documented by the available official Marvel and DC profiles and makes the scope clear. Steve Trevor is included as a partner of any gender, not as a girlfriend.
How this ranking works
The entries are ranked by how clearly the cited character material supports a life, skill set, or heroic contribution beyond romance. The list is necessarily selective: it uses official Marvel and DC descriptions, not an exhaustive survey of superhero fiction. A character’s place here is an editorial judgment, not an objective measure of worth.
1. Lois Lane: a reporter and hero in her own right
Lois Lane is the clearest case for putting professional identity ahead of romantic status. DC describes her as Superman’s wife, but also as a journalist and hero in her own right. Its profile presents her as a fearless social crusader and lists roles including journalist, costumed vigilante, ghostwriter, and political activist. Those descriptions come from DC’s official Lois Lane profile; they are the publisher’s characterization, not a neutral historical consensus.

Lois first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938, according to DC. Her appeal is that she can challenge power with reporting and action rather than relying on Superman’s abilities.
2. Peggy Carter: a life of espionage and action
Marvel’s 2020 MCU retrospective calls Peggy Carter Steve Rogers’s first love, but romance is only one part of the character’s story. Marvel’s profile highlights her espionage and combat skills and catalogs stories including Captain America, Agent Carter, and Captain Carter. The breadth of those stories makes her a strong pick for competence and independent purpose.
Rank #2
Keep the versions distinct: Marvel’s relationship description refers to its MCU retrospective, while the character close-up covers multiple Peggy Carter stories. The profile does not make every plot point common to every continuity. See Marvel’s MCU relationship retrospective and Peggy Carter character close-up.
3. Pepper Potts: the partner who becomes Rescue
Pepper earns her place for a particularly direct shift from partner to superhero. In the comics, Marvel says she has occasionally taken on superheroics in Rescue armor created for her by Tony Stark. That gives her an identity and role beyond being Iron Man’s romantic counterpart.

The screen relationship is a separate point: Marvel’s MCU retrospective describes Tony and Pepper as spouses and highlights her reassurance of Tony after the battle with Thanos in Avengers: Endgame. Do not combine that MCU relationship account with the comics Rescue storyline as though they were one continuity. Marvel’s Iron Man in Comics profile discusses Rescue, while its MCU retrospective covers the screen relationship.
4. Iris West: brave reporting without powers
Iris West shows how a character can matter in a superhero story without superpowers. DC describes her as an investigative reporter in Central City, calls her the love of Barry Allen’s life, and emphasizes her bravery. The same profile explicitly says Iris has no powers of her own.

Her independent work is the point: investigative reporting gives her a way to pursue truth that is not simply an extension of a Flash’s abilities. DC records her first appearance in Showcase #4 in 1956. See the official Iris West profile.

Jane Foster makes the list for her professional identity and her place in Thor’s life. Marvel’s Valentine’s Day comics reading list presents her as Thor’s partner and a mortal doctor, and points readers to Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #12. The evidence supports those descriptions for the referenced comics material; it does not establish the same relationship or role for every Jane Foster version.

Marvel’s Valentine’s Day comics reading list is a useful starting point for the pairing.
6. Steve Trevor: an ally, but not a girlfriend
Steve Trevor does not fit a literal list of girlfriends. He belongs only if “partners” is understood to include romantic partners of any gender. DC describes him as an ally to Diana in both civilian life and her superhero duties, a framing that gives him a role beyond romance.
DC records his first appearance as All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. See the official Steve Trevor profile.
Where to start reading
Marvel’s official reading list names two relevant issues for readers who want to follow up on the relationships: Invincible Iron Man (2008) #9 for Tony Stark and Pepper Potts, and Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #12 for Thor and Jane Foster. The list identifies the issues; it does not establish current availability of any particular edition or collection. See Marvel’s Valentine’s Day comics reading list.
