There is no official top-10 strength ranking to reproduce. Official sources do support two notable claims: the Hero of the South is described as a hero regarded as humanity’s strongest, while Macht is called the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction. Those statements use different scopes, so they do not establish a definitive winner across the whole cast.
This guide treats “strongest” as an evidence-based comparison, not a canonically certified list. It covers material published by the end of 2025, including manga material beyond the anime. Manga spoilers follow.
How to read a strength ranking for Frieren
Strength in Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is not presented as a single measurable stat. A character’s reputation, demonstrated victories, range of abilities, counters, and likely matchups all matter. A claim such as “strongest among the Seven Sages” cannot automatically be extended to every mage, warrior, or figure in the story.
- Stated standing: What the story or an official profile explicitly says about a character’s reputation or rank.
- Demonstrated feats: What opponents the character has actually defeated, and under what circumstances.
- Ability breadth and counters: Whether the character relies on prediction, concealment, curses, range, or another ability that may be more effective against some opponents than others.
- Evidence type: Official descriptions and depicted events are stronger grounds than an inferred head-to-head result. Any cross-category ordering not stated by a source remains an inference.
The official anime character roster identifies characters, not their positions on a power scale. It should not be read as a ranking: official anime character roster.

The strongest placements official sources support
Hero of the South: an exceptional human hero, not a proven universal number one
The official anime profile describes the Hero of the South as a legendary hero regarded as humanity’s strongest. It also attributes the ability to predict the future to him and says he defeated three of the Seven Sages of Destruction before he and Schlacht defeated one another. These are unusually strong credentials, but the profile’s wording is about humanity, and the mutual defeat is not evidence that he outranks every other character in every kind of encounter. Read the official Hero of the South profile.
Macht: explicitly the strongest of the Seven Sages of Destruction
VIZ describes Macht as “the most powerful of the Seven Sages of Destruction.” That is a clear publisher statement within the Sage group. It does not establish Macht’s place against the Hero of the South, Serie, or the Demon King, and it should not be broadened beyond its stated category. VIZ’s volume 10 page provides story context involving Macht and Denken: Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Vol. 10.

Why these sources do not make a top 10
The evidence above establishes high standing for two characters, but it does not supply comparable feats or official cross-cast placements for ten people. In particular, the available official roster confirms that Serie and Frieren are part of the cast; it does not rank either against the Hero of the South or Macht. VIZ’s series page includes a volume 14 synopsis describing a threat targeting Serie, but that synopsis alone does not establish an exact strength order. VIZ’s series page and synopsis.
For that reason, giving ten numbered places would imply a level of evidence the cited material does not provide. The most defensible comparison is narrower: the Hero of the South has an explicit reputation as humanity’s strongest and a reported record against three Sages; Macht has an explicit top position within the Seven Sages. The sources do not settle which one would win a hypothetical fight, nor do they establish a universal ranking that places either above all other characters.

Scope: 2025 material, manga spoilers, and the anime
This comparison is frozen to material published by the end of 2025. The manga goes beyond the anime, so anime-only readers should expect plot and character information from later manga material in discussions of the series. VIZ’s current catalog lists volumes including volume 14; that current catalog is not itself a definition of what had been published by the 2025 cutoff.
Nippon TV Holdings’ 2025 presentation says the manga had surpassed more than 30 million copies in circulation — Nippon TV Holdings, 2025. The figure is a circulation milestone reported by the company, not a measure of character strength. Nippon TV describes the story as Frieren’s new journey with Fern and Stark after the defeat of the Demon King. Nippon TV Holdings’ 2025 presentation.
