The official English edition of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End -Prelude-, Vol. 1 was released on March 24, 2026, according to publisher Yen Press. It is a novel—not a new manga volume—with five original short stories set around characters from the series. Yen Press lists hardcover and digital editions, as well as an audiobook product page.
What is the official Frieren prequel?
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End -Prelude-, Vol. 1 is an English-language novel published by Yen On, Yen Press’s light-novel imprint. Yen Press describes it as “five original short stories” featuring Frieren, Fern, Stark, Lawine, Kanne, and Aura. The publisher says the stories are written under the supervision of Kanehito Yamada, writer of the original manga; the volume is authored by Mei Hachimoku and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe. Jenny McKeon translated the English edition. See Yen Press’s Vol. 1 listing.
Release date and editions
Yen Press lists March 24, 2026 as the release date for both the print and digital editions. Since that date has passed, the book is no longer an upcoming U.S. release. Yen Press’s product page names Amazon among the retailers for both formats; stock and prices may vary by seller and change over time.

What comes next: Vol. 2
Yen Press lists Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End -Prelude-, Vol. 2 (novel) for October 13, 2026. That date is five days after October 8, 2026, so the publisher’s listing described it as forthcoming at that point. The hardcover listing gives 176 pages, ISBN 9798855439434, and a U.S. list price of $20; the digital ISBN is 9798855439441. See Yen Press’s Vol. 2 listing.
The second volume’s synopsis previews five additional character-focused stories: Übel’s past, Frieren’s home village, Serie as Flamme’s teacher, the thoughts of a young demon, and the routine of a receptionist at the Northern Branch of the Continental Magic Association. These are Vol. 2 story subjects, not episodes included in Vol. 1.
