Friends has six central stars, not nine: Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer. The show ran from 1994 to 2004, so comparing its screen-era styling with later appearances is a matter of taste—not an objective measure of who “aged gracefully” or looked better. This guide keeps the comparison to the six leads and focuses on the changing image audiences saw on screen, without guessing about anyone’s health or private choices.
What does “then and now” mean for the Friends cast?
The comparison is between the characters’ presentation during the series’ 1994–2004 run and the performers’ later public appearances. It is not a ranking of personal worth, health, or how anyone ought to look. Hair, wardrobe, makeup, lighting, role choices and the conventions of the period all shape a screen image; a photograph alone cannot establish why someone’s appearance changed.
The Television Academy identifies the six central characters and performers: Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Monica Geller (Courteney Cox), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer). The show premiered on September 22, 1994, and ran for ten seasons, ending in 2004. Television Academy: Friends; Television Academy: Friends at 30; Associated Press.
Six stars, considered individually
“Aged gracefully” and “looked better during the series” are subjective labels. Rather than claim a definitive winner, the notes below explain why viewers might prefer either the show-era character look or the performer’s later public image.
Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green
Rachel’s hair and polished wardrobe became a defining part of the series’ visual identity. A viewer who prefers the show’s tightly styled sitcom look may favor that era; someone who prefers a more relaxed public image may favor Aniston’s later appearances. Neither preference proves a single, measurable change in how she has aged.
Courteney Cox as Monica Geller
Monica’s look was shaped by the character’s neat, coordinated styling and by the show’s changing fashions over ten seasons. Comparing it with Cox’s later appearances is therefore partly a comparison of costume and presentation, not simply the passage of time. No conclusion about cosmetic procedures or health follows from visible differences.
Rank #2
Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay
Phoebe’s distinctive hair, clothing and bohemian character styling set her apart from the other friends. A viewer may prefer the character’s playful 1990s look or Kudrow’s later public style; both are aesthetic reactions to different contexts, not objective evidence of graceful or ungraceful aging.
Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani
Joey’s screen image leaned on casual clothes and a familiar sitcom leading-man presentation. Later appearances naturally reflect a different period and setting. Viewers who favor the character’s youthful, relaxed styling may choose the series years, while others may prefer LeBlanc’s later image.

Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing
Chandler’s appearance and wardrobe belong to the show’s decade-long character arc, while later public images come from different moments in Perry’s life and career. It would be misleading to turn those images into claims about his health or private choices. Perry died in 2023; the Associated Press reported that his five surviving Friends co-stars issued a joint statement after his death: Associated Press report.
David Schwimmer as Ross Geller
Ross’s academic wardrobe and evolving hair helped define the character’s look across the series. Schwimmer’s later appearances are not the same kind of comparison: they reflect different roles, events and styling. Whether the earlier or later image is more appealing is a personal judgment.

There is no source-backed, objective list that establishes which cast members “aged gracefully” or looked better in the series. Those phrases turn changing images into a verdict, even though the visible comparison is shaped by more than age. El País’s reunion commentary discusses how Hollywood applies different expectations to men and women as they age; it is cultural analysis, not evidence about an individual performer’s choices. El País commentary.
For a fairer comparison, keep the same standards in view: hairstyle, wardrobe, makeup, role styling and the date and context of public images. A reunion or promotional appearance is a particular event, not a neutral record of everyday life. Without comparable, dated images and a defined scoring method, a ranked list would be opinion dressed up as fact.

The Independent published a cast-age explainer in 2021, but those ages are historical rather than current: The Independent’s 2021 explainer. This article does not repeat those figures as present-day ages. A current age requires a verified birthdate and a calculation tied to a stated date; an age listed without that date can quickly become stale.
Who belongs in a list of nine or seven?
The headline’s numbers do not match the show’s central cast. The Television Academy identifies six principal friends, and the sources here do not establish a consistent rule for adding three performers to make nine—or for choosing seven people in the second category. Expanding the list would require naming a clear inclusion rule, such as recurring cast members, and applying it consistently. Without that rule, a six-person comparison is more accurate than inventing a broader ranking.
