The phrase “zero energy” was a subjective description circulating in that debate—not a measured assessment of the Perth performance.

For some Western Australian fans, the draw was the chance to hear familiar songs such as “Hero” and “All I Want For Christmas” live. PerthNow framed the occasion as the first time fans in Western Australia could hear those hits live in more than ten years.
Why fans said they still wanted to see Carey
The PerthNow story set online criticism of earlier shows against the enthusiasm of people interviewed at Langley Park. The interviewees spoke about Carey’s music, her presence and the personal history they connected with her songs—not about a representative view shared by every person in the crowd.

A connection built over time
Ashlea Velia, who was attending with friends and identified herself as a super fan, said: “We are coming here for her greatness not her dance moves.” She also described the emotional connection her music held: “She just brings you back to your childhood, we are here for her presence, she’s Mariah Carey, say less.”
Seeing an icon in person
Danielle Trumper told PerthNow: “We grew up with Mariah she’s an icon,” and said, “I’ll be emotional when she gets on stage, it’s surreal.” Her comments illustrate why some fans valued the occasion beyond any online argument about performance style.

What the ‘zero energy’ criticism does—and does not—establish
PerthNow recounted social-media criticism of Carey’s earlier Australian performances, including allegations of lip-syncing and forgetting lyrics, alongside subjective comments that she looked tired or low-energy. The report described a TikTok user alleging that Carey lip-synced in Sydney and footage said to show her mouth moving out of time with a backing track. Those are allegations and descriptions reported by PerthNow; they are not independently verified findings here, and they do not establish what happened in Perth.
Likewise, “zero energy” is a viewer’s characterization, not an objective measurement of a performance. The PerthNow article supplies no independent audio or video review, formal audience survey or performance-quality measure. The named attendees’ statements provide direct examples of fan enthusiasm, not evidence that all attendees agreed or that criticism was absent.

How health came into the discussion
PerthNow reported that some people defending Carey referred to fibromyalgia. It also reported that at an October 4 show in Sentul, Indonesia, Carey told the crowd, “I’ve been battling fibromyalgia for years,” and described that set as “softer, slower.” This is health context attributed to the report; it does not establish that fibromyalgia caused any particular performance characteristic in Australia.

The Perth story captures a contrast rather than a verdict on Carey’s performance: online posts criticized earlier shows, while fans interviewed before the Perth date said that hearing her songs and seeing her in person mattered to them. Because those reactions concern different people and settings—and the criticisms were not independently assessed—they should not be treated as competing measurements of one performance. What the report does show is that the criticism had not erased the anticipation expressed by the fans it spoke to.
