The French Foreign Legion is often presented as a mysterious force of outsiders, hardened by brutal training and sent into every imaginable war. The reality is more precise. It is a combat formation of the French Army, made up of units with different jobs: infantry, airborne troops, armored cavalry, assault engineers, mountain specialists, jungle troops, and support formations.

Its recruits do not all become paratroopers or commandos, and the Legion is not a private mercenary army. Every recruit first learns to function as a soldier in a demanding collective environment, then develops the skills required by the regiment to which he is assigned.

What the Foreign Legion is trained to do

The Legion is designed to deploy rapidly overseas, into crisis zones, or on domestic missions in France. Its units conduct overseas operations (OPEX), domestic missions (MISSINT), and temporary overseas deployments (MCD).

Its 11 regiments and corps-forming units do not have identical battlefield roles:

Unit Primary role
1er REC Armored cavalry
1er REG Assault engineering
2e REG Mountain assault engineering
2e REI Mechanized and dismounted infantry
2e REP Airborne infantry
13e DBLE Infantry
3e REI Infantry and security missions in French Guiana
5e RE Overseas support and security
1er RE Command, administration, and institutional support
4e RE Training
GRLE Recruiting and candidate administration

Together, these formations provide the French Army with capabilities covering armored combat, mechanized infantry, airborne operations, reconnaissance, mortars, drones, assault engineering, mountain warfare, jungle operations, and commando tasks.

Getting through selection

The Legion recruits throughout the year. An applicant reports in person to an information or recruiting facility and passes through a selection process lasting approximately three weeks.

  1. Evaluation — about seven days: motivation interviews, sports tests, an initial medical examination, and signing the initial five-year contract.
  2. Selection — about seven days: psychotechnical logic tests, another motivation interview, a security interview, further medical examination, a personality test, and appearance before the selection board.
  3. Incorporation — about seven days: publication of results, administrative formalities, presentation of the contract, and departure for the 4e Régiment étranger.

The first contract is five years. It is not a one-year trial enlistment, and recruits cannot negotiate it down to a shorter initial commitment. Later contracts may last from six months to five years.

Who can apply?

Published requirements include being over 17 and under 40 on the day of reporting, being able to read and write in one’s mother tongue, and presenting the required identity documents. No school diploma is required. Applicants from outside the Schengen area need a passport; applicants from Schengen and certain associated countries may use a national identity card and/or passport.

The Legion does not arrange a visa or permission to leave an applicant’s country. That responsibility remains with the candidate.

The physical tests

The physical assessment includes full overhand pull-ups and the Luc Léger, commonly known as the beep test. A correct pull-up begins from a dead hang with the arms fully extended and returns to the bottom position between repetitions.

The published minimum target for the Luc Léger is level 5, described by the Legion as approximately equivalent to 2,500 metres on the Cooper test. Candidates are strongly encouraged to swim at least 25 metres without flotation assistance. The published recommended body-mass index is between 18 and 30 kg/m².

One persistent internet claim says that every applicant must hit a fixed number of pull-ups or achieve a particular high beep-test score. The current official wording does not support that claim. The Legion says the sports tests are not automatically eliminatory, although poor performance can reveal weak preparation and limited motivation.

That distinction does not make fitness unimportant. A candidate who arrives unable to run, climb, recover, or carry weight is starting with an obvious disadvantage. Medical fitness for unrestricted service remains essential.

Medical screening and failure points

The Legion’s published examples of possible medical unfitness include active chronic illness or disease under treatment, tuberculosis, hepatitis, cancer, HIV, diabetes, psychiatric conditions currently under treatment, poor vision or hearing, serious permanent physical impairment, and severe dental problems.

Knee problems receive particular attention. Knee laxity, recurrent patellar dislocation, meniscal injury, and serious consequences from previous surgery can affect eligibility. Candidates are instructed to bring medical records and documentation covering earlier illness, operations, and treatment.

A failed decision may be temporary or final. Temporary failure can relate to a condition that may improve, ongoing treatment, temporary unavailability, or another correctable issue. The delay may run from several months to a year. A final decision is generally irrevocable, although the applicant may submit a written appeal to the General Commanding the Foreign Legion.

The logic, personality, and security tests are not publicly described in detail. The Legion keeps their contents confidential to preserve equal conditions for candidates.

Four months at the 4e Régiment étranger

Successful candidates leave the selection system for the 4e Régiment étranger at Castelnaudary, the Legion’s central training regiment. The published initial course lasts four months before assignment to an operational regiment.

This period is not simply a prolonged obstacle course. It has two connected purposes.

Education and integration

Recruits learn French, adapt to a collective military environment, and build cohesion with men from different countries and backgrounds. Communication is not an optional extra: a multinational unit must be able to understand orders, report problems, maintain equipment, and operate under pressure using a common language.

Military instruction

Every recruit is trained first as a fighter. Even those eventually assigned to cavalry or engineering begin with demanding infantry fundamentals. The official public material does not provide a universal day-by-day syllabus, so claims about an identical week-by-week program should be treated cautiously.

One confirmed feature is the 50-kilometre march carrying 20 kilograms of equipment associated with the first white-kepi ceremony. In February 2026, the French Army reported that one group completed the march after slightly more than a month of service. Similar marches subsequently become regular exercises.

The white kepi is therefore not a magic transformation into a finished combat veteran. It marks an important stage in a longer process involving endurance, discipline, French-language learning, military skills, and unit integration.

Assignment: the recruit does not simply pick a famous regiment

At the end of initial training, ranking affects the next move. The top ten candidates receive priority in choosing their preferred regiment. For everyone else, assignment depends on available vacancies and the needs of the Legion.

A recruit cannot assume that he will join the 2e Régiment étranger de parachutistes, receive a combat specialty, or be sent to an overseas posting. The result is shaped by performance, ranking, available places, and institutional requirements.

Specialization comes later

Initial training produces a general combatant. More specialized employment follows assignment to a regiment and progression through further training. Current recruiting information says a legionnaire eventually chooses a specialty after two years of service.

Examples include:

  • Sniper
  • Tank gunner or tank driver
  • Paratrooper
  • Demining engineer
  • Commando
  • Radio operator
  • Mechanic
  • Nurse
  • Information-technology specialist
  • Physical-training instructor
  • Musician
  • Cook
  • Driver

The two-year point describes the listed specialty pathway; it does not mean that a legionnaire performs no specialist duties beforehand. Regiments provide their own technical and tactical training, and unit requirements determine how quickly a soldier develops particular skills.

The 4e RE also trains future leaders. A recent cadre course for future non-commissioned officers lasted 15 weeks and covered command, physical endurance, moral endurance, and the ability to lead legionnaires in combat. A separate five-week formation générale élémentaire for future junior leaders combined classroom work, physical training, tactical scenarios, and urban-combat exercises.

How the Legion trains for modern combat

Recent French Army reporting shows training built around combined-arms operations rather than isolated infantry drills. Legion units practice working with armor, engineers, artillery, aircraft, drones, naval assets, and other formations.

Exercise Libecciu 2026

From May 5 to May 20, 2026, the 2e REP conducted Exercise Libecciu in a scenario involving approximately 700 legionnaires, more than 150 vehicles, and numerous air assets.

The exercise included:

  • Night airborne operations
  • C-130 parachute insertion
  • Combat against trench systems
  • 120-millimetre mortar support
  • A400M air delivery
  • Armored and dismounted movement
  • Urban combat
  • Offensive reconnaissance
  • Drone-supported operations
  • Commando infiltration
  • Hostage-rescue tasks within the exercise scenario

The force covered roughly 300 kilometres of offensive reconnaissance and trained alongside cavalry, engineers, forward air controllers, and Army divers. The purpose was to test airborne, motorized, and interarms combat as one connected operation.

Exercise Vent d’Automne 2025

During Exercise Vent d’Automne in Corsica, the 2e REP trained with more than 700 parachutists and supporting elements from the 17e Régiment du génie parachutiste, 35e Régiment d’artillerie parachutiste, 1er Régiment de hussards parachutistes, naval helicopters, and a C-130 Hercules.

The training tested the complete chain from planning and airborne insertion through infiltration, intelligence collection, offensive reconnaissance, coordinated assault, and helicopter redeployment.

Urban, mountain, and jungle environments

Urban fighting is part of normal preparation. In 2026, the 13e DBLE conducted maneuver training at CENZUB, the French Army’s urban-combat center. The 2e REP also incorporated urban combat into Exercise Libecciu.

Other regiments train for more specialized environments:

  • 2e REG: assault engineering in mountain and extreme-cold conditions.
  • 3e REI: operations in French Guiana, including jungle conditions, protection of the Guiana Space Centre, and missions against illegal gold mining.
  • 1er REG: assault-engineering tasks involving mobility, counter-mobility, and emergency deployment support.

These differences matter. A 2e REI infantryman, a 1er REC armored cavalryman, and a 2e REG engineer share a common foundation, but their equipment, physical demands, tactical problems, and daily training are not the same.

Are all legionnaires commandos?

No. The 2e REP contains the Groupe de commandos parachutistes, a specialized element within the regiment. Its existence does not make every recruit a commando, and it does not turn the entire Foreign Legion into a special-forces organization.

Likewise, not every legionnaire becomes a parachutist. Parachute qualification, armored employment, engineering, reconnaissance, and commando work depend on assignment, selection, further training, and the needs of the unit.

Myths that no longer describe the Legion

Claim What the current information shows
“The Legion accepts anyone.” Applicants must pass motivation, security, psychotechnical, medical, and physical evaluation. Failure may be temporary or final.
“You can enlist for one year.” The initial contract is five years.
“There is one mandatory pull-up number.” The current official tests page specifies full pull-up technique but does not publish a universal pass number.
“Everyone receives a new identity.” Current public recruitment information describes identity checks, interviews, documents, and screening; it does not support presenting a fabricated identity for every recruit as current policy.
“Every legionnaire becomes airborne or commando-qualified.” Those paths depend on regiment, selection, training, and vacancies.
“The Legion is a private mercenary force.” It is part of the French Army and operates under French command.
“Basic training is four months of nonstop combat.” The course also includes French, integration, physical conditioning, military education, and general combat fundamentals.
“The Legion is constantly fighting an active war.” It is a deployable combat force, but current reporting also covers exercises, domestic missions, overseas security duties, and preparation.

The Bottom Line

French Foreign Legion training is demanding because it combines physical endurance, military discipline, French-language instruction, collective integration, and combat preparation. But there is no single “Legionnaire” battlefield role. After common initial training, soldiers move into the very different worlds of infantry, airborne operations, armored cavalry, assault engineering, mountain warfare, jungle operations, or specialist support.

The most accurate picture is not a cinematic band of anonymous mercenaries. It is a professional French Army formation built to deploy, fight as part of combined arms, and adapt recruits from many backgrounds into disciplined soldiers.
