If you want a quick crossword without relying on the New York Times Mini, start with the Washington Post Mini Crossword, USA TODAY Two Minute Mini Crossword, or minicrossword.com. Those are the options the available provider pages substantiate; the evidence does not confirm 11 current, free, mini-style alternatives, so this guide does not pad the list with unverified names.
What counts as an alternative?
The New York Times describes its Mini as a smaller version of its Crossword. Its help page says a New York Times account is required to play, and identifies the website and apps as places to play. Games and All Access subscribers can solve past Mini puzzles in the archive. NYT Mini access details
For a useful replacement, look for an actual compact crossword—not merely another word game—and check whether it offers a daily puzzle, what access it requires, and whether it works for your device and region. “Free” can refer to a listing or a provider’s own description; it does not, by itself, establish that every puzzle, archive, app, or location is available without conditions.

Why this is not an 11-item list
Secondary roundups mention Crosshare, the LA Times Mini, WordTips Mini, Boston Globe Mini, and AARP Games Crossword, among other candidates. Those mentions are leads, not enough to establish that each service currently offers a mini-style crossword for free or to confirm its sign-in rules and regional access. An accurate list of 11 would require checking each candidate’s own current game page against the same criteria. Until those checks are established, presenting all 11 as free alternatives would promise more than the available evidence supports.

- For a daily puzzle: the Washington Post explicitly presents a daily Mini, and minicrossword.com describes its puzzle as daily.
- For a quick solve: USA TODAY’s listing uses the name “Two Minute Mini Crossword”; that title signals its intended format, not a guaranteed solve time for every player.
- For a small grid: minicrossword.com states that its puzzles are generally 5Ă—5 and 7Ă—7 on weekends.
- Before switching: open the provider’s page and confirm the current free-play, account, subscription, region, and device conditions that matter to you.
