Part of the Mint’s Music Legends series, the coin’s performance-inspired design includes a portrait, musical stave and an edge modeled on Mercury’s Live Aid armband.
What the coin commemorates
The Royal Mint announced the coin on 18 November 2025, linking it to Queen’s July 1985 Live Aid performance and the release of Mercury’s first solo studio album, Mr. Bad Guy, that year. It is an entry in the Mint’s Music Legends series. The Mint said Mercury Songs Ltd officially approved the design. The Royal Mint’s launch announcement also reported that Mercury’s sister, Kashmira Bulsara, visited the Mint and struck the first coin.
Bulsara described striking it as “such an emotional and proud moment.” In a statement reported by the Associated Press, she said a royal coin was “wonderful and very fitting” because Mercury died young and did not receive a royal medal for his musical talents. The Associated Press report provides that contemporaneous reaction.
How the design refers to Mercury’s performances
The reverse places Mercury centre stage mid-performance, with his signature alongside the portrait. According to the Royal Mint, the musical stave around the edge refers to his four-octave vocal range, while the studded edge takes inspiration from the armband he wore at Live Aid. Some versions use colour to depict his iconic yellow jacket.
