Frankie Muniz Clarifies Memory Loss Reports: What He Has Said About Migraines and His Memory

Frankie Muniz later rejected the claim that he had amnesia, saying he has a bad memory but not memory loss. The story began with his 2017 comments about Malcolm in the Middle and episodes he then called mini-strokes.

Frankie Muniz later disputed the claim that he had amnesia or no memory of Malcolm in the Middle. He said the mini-stroke diagnosis he discussed in 2017 was later found to be wrong, and that doctors diagnosed severe aura migraines. In a 2025 interview, he described himself as having “a bad memory,” but not memory loss. Those are Muniz’s accounts, not an independent medical assessment.

What did Frankie Muniz say about his memory?

The widely repeated story began during Muniz’s 2017 appearance on Dancing with the Stars, where he talked about not recalling many experiences from making Malcolm in the Middle. Coverage connected those comments to his mention of concussions and episodes he then called mini-strokes. It did not establish that either caused his difficulty remembering.

In September 2025, Muniz told Us Weekly that the story had grown into something he had not meant to say: he had not claimed to remember nothing about the show or to have amnesia. He summarized his position as, “I have a bad memory, but I [don’t] have memory loss.” The bracketed wording is part of the interview’s published quotation.

How his account changed

When What Muniz said or was reported to have said What that establishes
October 2017 During Dancing with the Stars, Muniz discussed not remembering many experiences from Malcolm in the Middle and mentioned nine concussions and “a fair amount of mini-strokes.” The ABC News report quoted him discussing his determination to keep dancing despite what he then described as mini-strokes. ABC News and TV Guide covered the remarks. It records his statements at the time. Muniz did not say he knew the concussions or episodes caused his memory difficulties.
July 2022 Muniz said the show’s edit made it seem he had no memory of anything. He described episodes involving vision loss, trouble recognizing faces, and difficulty speaking. He said he was initially told they were transient ischemic attacks (TIAs), then received an aura-migraine diagnosis after further investigation. He said he had not had an episode for a few years as of that interview. Us Weekly This is Muniz’s account of what he was told and experienced; it is not a medical record or confirmation of his current health.
September 2025 Muniz said he later learned the mini-stroke diagnosis was wrong, described a later diagnosis of severe aura migraines, and rejected the claim that he had amnesia or memory loss. Us Weekly It clarifies how he now describes the earlier reports, but does not independently establish a clinical explanation for any memory difficulty.

Did Frankie Muniz have mini-strokes?

In 2017, Muniz publicly described episodes as mini-strokes. In 2022, he said he had initially been told they were TIAs, but further investigation led to an aura-migraine diagnosis. In 2025, he again said the mini-stroke diagnosis was wrong. The available interviews document his changing account; they do not include medical records or a statement from a treating clinician.

Does Frankie Muniz remember Malcolm in the Middle?

Muniz has said he does remember the show and did not mean to suggest that he remembered nothing about it. The 2017 conversation focused on gaps in his recollection of experiences from that period, not a verified diagnosis of amnesia. In later interviews, he objected to the broader memory-loss framing.

A journal kept by his then-girlfriend to help him recall events was mentioned in 2017 coverage. That detail describes a personal aid reported at the time; it does not prove a diagnosis or a medical cause.

What can—and cannot—be concluded about his health

The public record summarized in interviews supports a timeline of what Muniz said: he mentioned nine concussions and mini-stroke-like episodes in 2017, later said the TIA diagnosis was incorrect and the episodes were severe aura migraines, and rejected the claim that he has amnesia. It does not establish the cause of any memory difficulty, confirm a neurological injury, or reveal his full medical history.

Muniz’s statement that he had not experienced an episode for a few years referred to his 2022 interview and should not be read as an update on his condition today. His 2025 description of his memory is his own characterization, not a clinical assessment.
