The earlier report of a temporary touring absence concerned foot and ankle problems; the available accounts do not establish a specific diagnosis or connect those problems to his death.
Why was Frank Beard absent from ZZ Top’s tour?
In March 2025, ZZ Top announced that Beard would temporarily step away from touring to address foot and ankle problems, according to the Associated Press. A Los Angeles Times report later described him as absent because of health issues and said drummer Michael Monahan was filling in.
Those reports do not provide a more specific diagnosis or treatment, and they do not say that the foot and ankle problems caused Beard’s death. The absence was a touring change, not evidence that he had left the band permanently.
What happened to Frank Beard?
ZZ Top’s official announcement says Beard died at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, on August 17, 2026, while in hospice care, with his family at his side. The band made the announcement on August 18. The Associated Press also reported his death at age 77, attributing the hospice and family details to publicist Bob Merlis.
