Four Years Later is an eight-episode Indo-Australian relationship drama in which a reunion is only the beginning. Newlyweds Sridevi and Yash have spent four years apart after Yash leaves India for medical training in Australia. When Sridevi joins him in Sydney, she finds that the life he described—and the people they have become—do not quite match her expectations. The series is most compelling when it treats love not as a simple return to the past, but as something tested by migration, changed identities and the difficult work of building intimacy again.

What is Four Years Later about?

Created by Mithila Gupta, Four Years Later follows Sridevi, played by Shahana Goswami, and Yash, played by Akshay Ajit Singh. The newlyweds are separated when Yash leaves India for a medical traineeship in Australia. Four years later, Sridevi joins him in Sydney and must reckon with the distance between the marriage she imagined and the relationship they now have.

The setup could support a conventional reunion romance, but the series is more interested in what separation has done to each person. Sridevi’s arrival does not restore the couple to an earlier version of themselves. It puts her in an unfamiliar place, among people and expectations she has to navigate, while she works out what she wants from her own life as well as from her marriage. Kate Box plays Gabs, a friend whose perspective gives Sridevi another way to understand her circumstances.

SBS frames the story around intimacy, longing, familial duty, belonging and independence. That wider frame is the series’ defining choice: the central question is not only whether Sridevi and Yash can find their way back to each other, but what reconnection might mean after both have changed.

Does the emotional story work?

Its strongest scenes come from the gap between being physically together and feeling close. The four-year separation is not treated as a problem that disappears once Sridevi reaches Australia. Instead, the couple has to confront different expectations and the consequences of a life built at a distance. That gives the romance emotional stakes beyond the mechanics of a reunion.

Goswami’s performance is the clearest reason to stay with the series. Scroll reviewer Udita Jhunjhunwala calls it the show’s emotional backbone, praising the way it carries the effects of displacement and a relationship under strain. Her reading captures the drama’s most affecting quality: Sridevi’s feelings are not confined to longing for Yash. They are entangled with the question of how to belong in a new country without losing sight of herself.

There is also a useful tension in the show’s cross-cultural setting. The story moves between India and Australia, and uses both Hindi and English; SBS says filming took place in Mumbai, Jaipur and Sydney. Those details give the drama a specific geographic and linguistic texture rather than making migration a vague backdrop. The series is about these characters and the pressures they encounter, not a claim about all Indian marriages or families.

What are the show’s weaknesses?

The storytelling can be less focused than its central relationship. OTTplay reviewer Swetha Ramakrishnan praises Goswami and the leads’ chemistry, while finding some themes scattered or repetitive. She also notes that an early non-linear approach gives way to a more straightforward structure. Those are critical judgments, but they point to a real viewing consideration: the series does not always move with the same clarity or pace as its emotional premise suggests.

If you want a tightly plotted romance that steadily builds toward a decisive resolution, the shifting emphasis may frustrate you. The series is a better fit if you are comfortable with a character-led drama that pauses over changing expectations, cultural displacement and independence, even when its thematic strands do not always converge neatly.

Who should watch Four Years Later?

  • Watch it for the performances if you value emotionally grounded acting and a relationship shaped by years of separation.
  • Try it for its setting and language if you are interested in an Indo-Australian story told across India and Sydney in Hindi and English.
  • Set expectations for a slower, uneven drama if you prefer a focused plot: reviewers have identified repetition and scattered themes alongside the show’s strengths.
  • Look beyond the reunion question if stories about a woman’s changing sense of self matter as much to you as the fate of the couple.

Verdict

Four Years Later is an emotionally resonant relationship drama when it recognizes that reunion cannot erase the years that came before it. Shahana Goswami gives the story its strongest emotional anchor, and its Indian-Australian setting makes the pressures on the marriage feel particular rather than generic. The pacing and themes can wander, but viewers looking for a performance-led story about love, migration and the effort to reconnect will find more here than a simple second-chance romance.
