What Morris alleged happened
According to Morris’s complaint, he went to Ascension Macomb-Oakland Hospital in Warren, Michigan, in April 2023 with chest pain and breathing problems. He alleged that staff questioned whether he was a member of the Four Tops, ordered a psychological evaluation and restrained him rather than treating his cardiac symptoms. The May 2025 court order summarizes the allegations; it does not establish them as facts. The Associated Press’s June 11, 2024 report likewise described the restraint claim as an allegation.
The headline phrase “straitjacket” is not a finding by the court. The court order refers to restraints, as does AP’s account of the suit. The available sources do not establish the specific equipment used.
AP reported that the complaint said a nurse eventually believed Morris was a Four Tops member and the psychological evaluation was canceled. AP also reported the complaint’s account that the hospital offered Morris a $25 gift card as an apology and that he declined it. These details are reported claims, not judicial findings.

What the hospital said
In a statement reported by AP, the hospital said: “We remain committed to honoring human dignity and acting with integrity and compassion for all persons and the community. We do not condone racial discrimination of any kind. We will not comment on pending litigation.” AP did not identify an individual spokesperson.
What the lawsuit alleges and what the court has decided
Morris filed the federal case on June 10, 2024, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. The docket lists 42 U.S.C. § 1981 among the causes of action and records a jury demand by both sides. Ascension filed an answer and affirmative defenses on July 9, 2024, according to the docket listing. The Justia docket listing identifies the case as Morris v. Ascension Macomb Oakland Hospital, No. 2:24-cv-11502.

On May 20, 2025, Magistrate Judge Elizabeth A. Stafford granted part of Morris’s motion to amend his complaint and denied part. The order allowed him to clarify his legal name as Joseph Morris, also known as Alexander Morris, and to remove Holly Jackson and Greg Ciesielski, who had been voluntarily dismissed.
The judge denied Morris’s request to add Henry Ford Warren Hospital based on the successor-liability allegations then presented. The order said those allegations did not plausibly establish that Henry Ford had assumed Ascension’s liability, and described the proposed claim as speculative. It allowed Morris to seek discovery about the transaction and renew his request if he found facts supporting the theory. The judge wrote: “The Court finds that Morris states no plausible claim against Henry Ford.” That conclusion concerned the proposed claim against Henry Ford, not the merits of Morris’s allegations about Ascension. The May 20, 2025 order does not determine whether the hospital visit occurred as Morris described.

What is known about the case’s status
The latest verified procedural development here is the May 20, 2025 amendment order. The available sources do not establish what happened after that date, including whether the case settled, went to trial or received a final ruling. The amendment decision alone does not mean the underlying lawsuit ended.

AP reported that Morris joined the Four Tops in 2019; he was not an original member. The group began in the 1950s and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990, according to AP.
