If you want an East Coast trip built around Halloween, four destinations fit four different kinds of night: Salem, Massachusetts for a month-long, town-wide celebration; Sleepy Hollow Country, New York for Washington Irving folklore and fall events; Philadelphia for haunted attractions inside a former prison; and Williamsburg, Virginia for a theme park’s nighttime Halloween event.
This guide covers those four and does not list twelve. We could not confirm current, official Halloween programming for the other eight towns, and a longer list built on unconfirmed names would be less useful than a shorter one you can check.
Compare the four before you pick
The four destinations differ more in kind than in degree. Salem is a whole town in festival mode, Sleepy Hollow Country is a literary and seasonal landscape, Philadelphia is a city with dedicated haunts, and Williamsburg is a single theme park running an adults-focused event. The table compares them on the points that matter most when you choose.
| Destination | Trip style | Core Halloween draw | Intensity | Age guidance | 2026 dates | Advance planning |

The four destinations
Salem, Massachusetts: a month of town-wide Halloween
Salem is the choice when you want Halloween to be the whole town rather than one attraction. Destination Salem’s 2025 tourism material describes Haunted Happenings as a month-long celebration that ties the season to the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and to the city’s maritime history. The same material reports that more than half a million people travel to Salem each October, and it gives approximately 1.8 million annual visitors, nearly $140 million in tourism spending and support for 1,000 jobs. Those are the destination’s own 2025 figures, not independently verified and not current 2026 counts, so treat them as context for the city’s scale rather than a forecast of crowds.

Because the celebration runs all month, the practical question is which weekends you can spare, not which single night to protect. The historical setting gives the trip its through-line: the witch trial story and the port town’s seafaring past shape much of what the city presents in October.
Sleepy Hollow Country, New York: Irving, folklore and pumpkins
Sleepy Hollow Country is the strongest choice for readers who come for the literary connection. The official tourism page links the area’s October programming to Washington Irving’s story and lists a wide slate of events beyond a single haunt, from haunted hayrides and cemetery tours to the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze, which features more than 7,000 hand-carved illuminated pumpkins.
Rank #2
Set expectations on the Headless Horseman. The tourism page says he may appear at listed events but offers no guarantee, so plan the trip around the events themselves. If you want the source text beforehand, a physical edition of Irving’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is useful background reading, though not something you need to bring.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: haunts inside a former prison
Philadelphia suits a trip that combines haunted attractions with a city itinerary. The main draw is Halloween Nights at Eastern State Penitentiary, which Eastern State says began in 1991 as a fundraiser for preservation. All proceeds benefit the site’s preservation, education and workforce programs.

The 2026 event adds an expanded Crypt, a Quick Pass option and add-on flashlight tours alongside the five haunted houses, historic tours and museum experiences, live performances, food and drinks, and themed bars and lounges. The Crypt and the tours are the most useful choices if you want the building’s history on the same night as the scares. For readers who want more than one haunt, Visit Philadelphia’s 2026 guide lists Fright Factory, which it describes as a physical, high-intensity haunt.
Williamsburg, Virginia: a theme park’s adult Halloween night
Williamsburg is the choice for a theme park night rather than a walking festival. Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Williamsburg combines haunted houses and scare zones with shows and nighttime coasters, so the evening can be built around rides as much as scares.
Costumes are not permitted during Howl-O-Scream, which is worth knowing before you pack. The event is aimed at adults, so it is not a family outing in the way a parade or hayride is. Dates can change or be canceled without notice, so confirm the calendar before you buy.
Quick Recap
Planning checks before you book
- Confirm dates first. Eastern State’s and Busch Gardens’ 2026 dates are published, but both operators can change them. Check the official calendar within days of travel.
- Buy tickets ahead for Sleepy Hollow and Eastern State. Sleepy Hollow’s official page says most October events sell out, especially weekend time slots. Eastern State recommends buying online in advance.
- Check what your admission covers in Williamsburg. Howl-O-Scream is included with applicable park admission, and the admission product, operating calendar and event conditions determine what you can enter.
- Check age guidance for each event. Philadelphia and Williamsburg publish explicit age guidance. For Salem and Sleepy Hollow Country, the sources reviewed here do not state age suitability for individual events, so confirm with the organizer before bringing young children.
Which trip fits you
- You want a whole-town October with history: Salem. Plan around the month, and expect the city to be busy throughout.
- You want folklore, hayrides, pumpkins and a literary setting: Sleepy Hollow Country. Book the popular time slots early.
- You want haunted attractions plus a city itinerary: Philadelphia. Choose the Crypt or the tours if you want the prison’s history, and the high-intensity haunts if you want the most intense scares.
- You want a theme park night with adult-oriented scares: Williamsburg. Confirm admission, dates and costume rules before you go.
