Four men were arrested and charged in connection with the May 2024 killing of actor Johnny Wactor. Prosecutors accused Robert Barceleau and Sergio Estrada of murder; Leonel Gutierrez and Frank Olano later pleaded to lesser offenses and received prison sentences. Barceleau and Estrada were ordered to stand trial in January 2025, but that procedural ruling was not a verdict.
What happened to Johnny Wactor?
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Wactor, 37, was leaving his bartending job at the Moxy Hotel in downtown Los Angeles at about 3:25 a.m. on May 25, 2024, when he encountered three men near Hope Street and Pico Boulevard. Prosecutors said the men were attempting to steal the catalytic converter from his parked car and alleged that Barceleau shot Wactor once in the chest. Wactor died at a hospital. These details were presented in the DA’s charging announcement, not established by a trial verdict. Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, August 19, 2024.
Who were the four men arrested, and what happened in their cases?
The charges and outcomes differed. Two men faced murder charges; the other two resolved related cases through pleas to lesser offenses.
| Defendant | Case and reported status |
|---|---|
| Robert Barceleau | Prosecutors charged him with murder, including a special-circumstance allegation tied to attempted robbery, as well as attempted robbery and grand theft. The DA said he could face life without parole if convicted as charged. In January 2025, he pleaded not guilty and was ordered to stand trial, according to the Associated Press. | Sergio Estrada | Prosecutors charged him with murder, attempted robbery and grand theft, with firearm allegations. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered to stand trial in January 2025, the Associated Press reported. DA announcement; Associated Press, January 2025. |
| Leonel Gutierrez | He was not charged with killing Wactor. He pleaded guilty in September 2024 to attempted robbery and grand theft and received four years in state prison in January 2025, according to the Associated Press. DA announcement, September 12, 2024; Associated Press, January 2025. |
| Frank Olano | He was not charged with killing Wactor. Prosecutors initially charged him with accessory after the fact, receiving stolen property and firearm-possession offenses. In January 2025, he received five years and eight months in state prison after pleading no contest to lesser crimes, the Associated Press reported. DA announcement; Associated Press, January 2025. |
Have Barceleau and Estrada gone to trial?
The last independently corroborated court milestone here is from January 2025: a judge ordered Barceleau and Estrada to stand trial after finding that prosecutors had met the probable-cause threshold to proceed. The Associated Press reported that both pleaded not guilty. A preliminary-hearing ruling determines whether a case may proceed; it does not decide guilt.

- Arrested means taken into custody; it is not a finding of guilt.
- Charged means prosecutors formally accuse someone of an offense. The charges against Barceleau and Estrada included murder; the other men faced different allegations.
- Ordered to stand trial means a judge found sufficient probable cause for the prosecution to proceed, not that the defendant was convicted.
- Pleaded guilty or no contest and sentenced describes the separate outcomes reported for Gutierrez and Olano. Their resolutions did not decide the murder charges against Barceleau and Estrada.
At the August 2024 charging announcement, LAPD Chief Dominic Choi said, “While this was not an easy case for anyone involved, I am confident that we have the right people on the right charges.” That was his contemporaneous view, not a judicial determination of guilt.
