Spoilers for Fountain of Youth. Luke turns away from the fountain when he realizes its promise may cost him his memories and the people he loves. Owen drinks and appears to be drawn into it. The closing scenes leave room for another adventure, but cast enthusiasm and sequel hints are not confirmation that a second film is happening.
What happens at the end of Fountain of Youth?
The film’s quest ends inside an Egyptian pyramid, where treasure hunter Luke Purdue, his sister Charlotte, and her son Thomas reach the Fountain of Youth. Owen Carver, the wealthy backer who funded the expedition, has a different motive from the healing rationale he gave Luke: he wants the power the fountain offers.
Luke drinks first, then recognizes what the fountain could take from him. Renewed youth or power might come at the cost of his memories and his life with Charlotte and Thomas. He resists the temptation. Owen drinks too, but the scene shows him being absorbed into the fountain rather than explaining exactly what happens to him afterward.
Is Owen trapped in the fountain?
John Krasinski said he believes Owen is trapped there. That is Krasinski’s reading of the scene, not a clearly established rule of the film’s mythology. Domhnall Gleeson likewise interpreted Owen’s choice as a decision to keep going instead of stepping back, with a price attached. The film leaves the precise mechanics of Owen’s fate open.

What does the ending mean?
Director Guy Ritchie frames the fountain as a test of restraint: its danger is not only drinking once, but being unable to stop. He explained that it is concealed because people may struggle to resist drinking more than they should. In his account, the fountain remains sealed until humanity can drink without surrendering to the temptation to drown in it.
Luke’s choice gives that idea a personal cost. He turns away not because the fountain has no appeal, but because its promise could erase the memories and relationships that give his life meaning. Natalie Portman offered a related interpretation: chasing youth might mean giving up the identity formed through loved ones and lived experience. These comments illuminate the ending without making either interpretation the only possible one.

Why does Luke refuse the fountain?
Luke’s bond with Charlotte and Thomas outweighs the prospect of power or renewed youth. The choice makes the fountain’s central temptation more than a question of whether a person wants to live longer: it asks what that person would be willing to lose in exchange.
Does the ending set up a sequel?
Yes, it leaves story threads open. Esme tells Luke she will come after him if he gives her a reason. Eiza González described the line as deliberately ambiguous: it could point to romance, the protectors, or both. On the journey home, Luke and Charlotte talk about another adventure, and Thomas says he has an idea.
