Spoilers for Foundation Season 3, Episode 10, “The Darkness.” The finale aired September 12, 2025, and runs 51 minutes, according to Apple’s episode listing. Gaal appears to defeat the Mule, but the apparent victory is a trap: Bayta Mallow reveals that she is the real Mule. Brother Day dies, while Demerzel is apparently vaporized protecting a Cleon infant.
Does the Mule win in the Season 3 finale?
Not in the form Gaal expects. She enters the mind of the Mule played by Pilou Asbæk and cuts his throat, seemingly ending the threat she has spent the season preparing to stop. But Gaal senses the Mule’s presence afterward. Bayta Mallow then reveals herself as the real Mule, turning the apparent victory into a deception.

Executive producer David S. Goyer told TheWrap that Bayta used her powers to make Asbæk’s character believe he was the Mule. The reveal means the apparent Mule loses, but the real one survives the confrontation as an ongoing threat. Bayta’s escape from the finale’s outcome also leaves Gaal isolated, with the Second Foundation scattered.
Who is the real Mule?
Bayta Mallow is the real Mule. Her revelation reframes the season’s central conflict: the figure Gaal believes she has confronted and defeated was being manipulated by Bayta. The show’s twist is a major departure from Isaac Asimov’s novels, as TechRadar’s finale explainer notes. The television adaptation’s choice should not be read as a guide to what its next season will do with the book’s story.

Is Brother Day really dead?
Yes. Brother Darkness shoots and kills Day at the palace. Day had removed his protective nanites earlier, so he could not rely on the protection normally given to Cleon clones. The finale also shows Brother Darkness destroying most of the Cleon clone stock before using an infant to force Demerzel to respond.
Does Demerzel die?
The episode shows Demerzel being vaporized in the Ascension Chamber as she protects a Cleon infant. The scene presents her destruction as decisive, but it does not establish whether restoration is impossible. Her future remains unresolved rather than confirmed either way.

What happens to Gaal and the Second Foundation?
Gaal survives the confrontation, but she does not emerge with a clean victory. Bayta’s identity is exposed, the Second Foundation is scattered, and Gaal is left alone. The finale leaves her facing the consequences of having underestimated who was truly directing events.
What does the robot on the Moon mean?
The closing image shows a robot skull linking with a robot on the Moon near Earth. Goyer told TheWrap that the novels place surviving robots on the Moon after the Robot Wars, connecting the image to Asimov’s larger fictional history. He also emphasized that the show has deliberately kept Earth’s location hidden: “We know that Earth is something that exists, but for whatever reason, people don’t know where it is anymore, which is not by happenstance, that information has been redacted.”

Goyer described the book connection this way: “I always intended to bring things back there and in the books, the robots are hiding in the moon, there’s a group of them that haven’t been destroyed, and they’ve been on the moon ever since the Robot Wars.” The finale hints at a concealed robot presence near Earth, but it does not explain what the network intends or how it will affect the series.
How does the finale differ from Asimov’s books?
The clearest difference is the Mule and Bayta reveal: the television series makes Bayta the real Mule and the apparent Mule her unwitting stand-in. That is a significant change from the novels, but the show’s book references do not confirm that future episodes will follow the same plot or outcomes as Asimov’s work.

Has Foundation been renewed for Season 4?
Yes. By the time TheWrap interviewed Goyer about the finale, the series had been renewed for a fourth season. The report and the other sources cited here did not establish a release date, so no premiere date can be confirmed from them.
