Foundation looks and thinks on a vast scale, but its first season can be difficult to follow as it moves among characters, storylines and stretches of time. TIME’s review praised the show’s visual design while finding its opening convoluted; that reviewer said the storytelling improved from episode four, when the timeline hopping slowed and character sections grew longer. That is one critic’s assessment, not a measure of every viewer’s experience.
What Foundation is about
Apple describes Foundation as a science-fiction adventure. The first episode follows a young woman leaving her home world on an epic mission connected to the Empire. The larger story centers on mathematician Hari Seldon’s prediction that the Galactic Empire will fall and on the Foundation’s effort to preserve knowledge through the upheaval that follows. The series retains this central situation from Isaac Asimov’s work, while adapting it for television rather than reproducing the stories scene by scene. (Apple TV listing; SFRA Review)
Apple announced a 10-episode first season, which premiered on September 24, 2021, with episodes released weekly after launch. The Apple TV listing gives episode one a runtime of 1 hour 9 minutes; that is the first episode’s length, not a runtime for the season as a whole. (Apple TV Press; Apple TV listing)
Why the story can be hard to follow
The season asks viewers to keep track of several strands while introducing a sprawling setting and moving across time. That scale suits a story about the fate of an empire, but it also makes the opening feel busy: the viewer must orient themselves among characters and events before the show’s structure settles into a clearer rhythm.
#1 Best Overall
- Medium Dark 1 Shade: Designed for medium-dark skin with neutral undertones.
- Soft Matte Finish: Smooths skin while reducing shine and visible pores.
- Hybrid Formula: Combines skincare hydration with foundation coverage.
- Lightweight Texture: Feels breathable and blends effortlessly.
- All Skin Types: Suitable for normal, dry, oily, and combination skin.
TIME’s reviewer specifically described the opening as convoluted, pointing to its many characters, story threads and time shifts. The reviewer found the storytelling improved from episode four, as the timeline hopping slowed and individual character sections became longer. This is a useful account of how the season’s pacing may land, rather than proof that all viewers will respond the same way. (TIME)
How the adaptation differs from Asimov
Viewers approaching the series through the books should not expect a scene-by-scene screen version. The SFRA Review notes that the show keeps the source material’s core situation while changing its approach for television. That distinction matters: the series adapts ideas and a broad historical premise, but its character-centered storytelling and handling of time are part of the adaptation, not evidence that it is trying to reproduce every book episode directly. - TRIPPLE TREAT: This blurring foundation provides a triple treat to the skin which means the formula blurs texture, balances oil, and boosts hydration.
- BLUR: It's made with white-rose stem cells, which blur skin, create a petal-soft texture, and help control oil throughout the day.
- NATURAL: It also uses skin-like treated pigments to morph into skin texture for a natural finish.
- PROVEN RESULTS: In a consumer study with 33 participants, after 1 week of use, 100% agreed, it provided a boost of hydration, it made skin instantly feel smoother and it was so lightweight, it felt like their skin.
- PEACE OF MIND FORMULA: This product is vegan and cruelty-free.
A useful comparison with Asimov’s stories is therefore less about counting plot points than asking how each version handles three things:
- Fidelity to the source: Which central ideas and situations remain, and what has been reshaped for television?
- Time and ensemble plotting: How do the books and series guide the reader or viewer through long spans and multiple characters?
- History as drama: How does each version turn large-scale ideas about civilization and historical change into stories about people?
Is Foundation season 1 worth watching?
If you enjoy ambitious science fiction and are willing to spend time orienting yourself in a complex ensemble story, the season offers a richly designed world and a premise built around the survival of knowledge. If you want a straightforward, tightly focused opening, its early shifts among threads and periods may frustrate you. TIME’s review suggests that the narrative becomes easier to follow from episode four, but that is a critic’s impression, not a guarantee of how the pacing will work for you.

The series was produced for Apple by Skydance Television, with David S. Goyer as showrunner and executive producer. Goyer’s official notes describe the show as developing its characters and themes beyond the first season. Apple’s October 2021 renewal announcement also quoted executive producer Robyn Asimov praising the adaptation for bringing her father’s philosophy and ideas to the screen while staying true to his work. These are statements from the people behind the series, not independent assessments of its success. (Skydance; Apple TV Press)
Readers curious about the source material can turn to Asimov’s Foundation stories, but the series does not require prior reading to follow its central premise. It is available to stream on Apple TV+ according to Skydance; catalog availability can vary by country and date. (Skydance)
