Instead of fighting through E1M1, visitors can look at Renaissance paintings, listen to Bach, and partake in wine and cheese. It is a free browser game by Filippo Meozzi and Liam Stone, available on Itch.io and Newgrounds.
What is Doom: The Gallery Experience?
It is a reworking of E1M1, the first level of the 1993 Doom, as an interactive gallery rather than a combat run. The familiar game space becomes a setting for looking around and engaging with art. This is a free browser experience, not a new commercial Doom release.

What can you do in the gallery?
- View Renaissance paintings displayed throughout the level.
- Listen to Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Suite No. 1 in G major.”
- Partake in wine and cheese as part of the gallery-opening atmosphere.
- Follow links accompanying the artworks to their corresponding pages at the Metropolitan Museum of Art for further information.
Why turn Doom into an art gallery?
Creator Filippo Meozzi described the idea as a parallel between the game’s demons and the social performance of an art opening: “The idea that I thought [of was] Doom is, you know, you go to hell and you kill demons and part of going to a gallery opening is you’re fighting the demonic nightmare of all of these people blowing smoke up everyone else’s back end,”
That conceit changes what the level is for. A conventional Doom run emphasizes combat and survival; this version shifts attention toward browsing, music, and learning about the paintings. Its gallery setting replaces the hellscape-and-enemies premise with the rituals and atmosphere of an exhibition.
