Forever Is Now is strongest when it refuses the easy joke. Neasa Ní Chianáin’s 100-minute documentary follows Eamon Ryan through his final 18 months in government, placing renewable-energy policy, political hostility and far-right pressure beside his relationship with his autistic son, Tommy. The result is an observational portrait that can evoke The Thick of It’s access to political machinery, but its governing mood is patience rather than satire—and the film’s moral seriousness is an interpretation, not an established critical consensus.
What Forever Is Now follows
Ryan is presented as both Irish Green Party leader and Cabinet Minister during a period when the party is trying to implement a major climate programme. The political strand tracks his advocacy for renewable energy and climate justice for the Global South while he encounters public resistance, political pressure, online abuse and far-right pushback.
The second strand is domestic. The film follows Ryan’s relationship with his autistic son, Tommy, and links the patience required at home with the persistence demanded by political work. That connection comes from the film’s official descriptions, which frame both stories around endurance and hope; whether the parallel feels illuminating or overly neat is one of the documentary’s central tests.
Does the Thick of It comparison work?
The comparison belongs to the supplied headline, not to the official film listings or production page. It promises close access to government, the pressure of political decisions and the absurdity that can accompany public life. Ní Chianáin’s method does provide the access, but this is documentary observation rather than scripted political satire.

Observation instead of manufactured punchlines
Where The Thick of It turns institutional dysfunction into comedy, Forever Is Now keeps its attention on the consequences of policy and the people absorbing political pressure. The film’s value is therefore less about finding a joke in a ministerial exchange than about watching a politician continue to work when persuasion is slow, opposition is aggressive and climate decisions have consequences beyond one election cycle.
The personal story changes the political reading
Ryan’s family life prevents the portrait from becoming a simple campaign chronicle. The documentary asks viewers to consider whether the same measured approach visible with Tommy can survive inside coalition politics and a hostile online environment. That can deepen the political material, although viewers expecting an uninterrupted account of climate legislation may find the family strand deliberately redistributes the film’s focus.

Climate policy, ambition and evidence
Festival and producer material describe the Irish climate plan as “one of Europe’s most ambitious.” That is promotional characterization, not a comparative finding established by the available sources. The documentary’s political stakes remain clear without treating the phrase as an independently verified ranking: the Greens are shown attempting a substantial programme while facing resistance from voters, colleagues and organized far-right opposition.
Guth Gafa’s 2026 impact-campaign page says that 82% of people in Ireland are “alarmed or concerned about climate change.” The accessible campaign text does not identify the underlying survey, its fieldwork date or its methodology, so the figure should be read as a campaign-page statistic rather than a fully documented independent measure.

Form, tone and the film’s moral argument
The documentary’s observational approach aims to show political bustle without being swept along by it. A Screen Daily sentence reproduced on Guth Gafa’s campaign page says Ní Chianáin “gives a sense of the bustle of politics without getting swept along by it” and lets audiences see “past the politics to the genuine care Ryan has for environmental stewardship and how his patient approach with his son is mirrored by his strategy at work.” That is the only collected review quotation and is reproduced by the campaign page rather than checked against a direct Screen Daily page.
As a reviewer’s judgment, the film earns the “with morals” part of the headline when it treats policy as lived responsibility rather than theatrical conflict. It does not make Ryan an uncomplicated hero: public anger, institutional constraints and the possibility that good intentions are insufficient remain part of the picture. The film’s moral force comes from sustained attention, not from a claim that every decision succeeds.
