Rubin joined as his Nine Inch Nails touring commitments were winding down; NIN later brought Freese back. Rubin says the sequence was not a coordinated drummer swap.
Who is Foo Fighters’ new drummer?
Ilan Rubin is an American drummer and multi-instrumentalist who had a long association with Nine Inch Nails before joining Foo Fighters. His other credits include Angels & Airwaves, Paramore and Danny Elfman, and he has released music as The New Regime. Rubin was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with Nine Inch Nails in 2020, according to SPIN and Variety Australia.
What happened to Josh Freese?
In May 2025, Freese said Foo Fighters had let him go and chosen “to go in a different direction with their drummer.” He said he was “not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed.” Contemporary coverage reported no detailed explanation from the band. Freese’s remarks describe his reaction; they do not establish an official reason for the decision. Pitchfork’s contemporaneous report covers his statement and the band’s wording.
Freese had previously played with Nine Inch Nails from 2005 to 2008. When Rubin left NIN to join Foo Fighters, the group brought Freese back, as reported by SPIN. The two musicians’ histories with NIN help explain why the personnel changes appeared connected, but do not show that Foo Fighters and NIN arranged a trade.

How did Ilan Rubin join Foo Fighters?
Rubin said Dave Grohl contacted him as his NIN touring commitments were ending. He auditioned, received Foo Fighters songs to prepare and studied the band’s recent live versions so he could learn how the arrangements were being played onstage. Rubin described arriving ready to perform. His account appeared in an April 2026 interview with Blabbermouth.net.
At the time Rubin’s appointment was reported on July 30 and 31, 2025, outlets noted that it was not yet clear how long he would remain with Foo Fighters. That was the reporting caveat at the time, not a present-day statement of uncertainty: later coverage describes him as the drummer who replaced Freese. The Associated Press also referred to Rubin as the drummer replacing Freese in a May 2026 account.

Was it a Foo Fighters–Nine Inch Nails drummer swap?
No coordinated exchange is established. The timing made the changes look like a swap: Foo Fighters hired Rubin, then NIN brought Freese back. But Rubin said Freese had already left Foo Fighters before the band contacted him, and that NIN needed a drummer after Rubin accepted the Foo Fighters job. He rejected the swap interpretation, saying, “But it was certainly not a swap.” Rubin’s interview account describes the events as sequential decisions, not a deal between bands.

Grohl described Rubin as arriving from a Nine Inch Nails live setup shaped by click tracks and tightly patterned rhythms after roughly 17 years with the band. He said Foo Fighters encouraged Rubin to play beyond simply reproducing recorded parts, telling him, “Ilan, keep doing that.” Grohl’s account frames the difference as one of performance context and freedom, not an objective measure of either drummer’s ability. In the same April 2026 interview, Grohl praised Rubin’s capabilities as “off the fucking charts.” Blabbermouth.net reported Grohl’s comments.
