Fly Me to the Moon has a winning idea and two appealing leads, but its comedy, romance and conspiracy-flavored plot never quite pull together. The result is a handsome Apollo-era diversion that feels less lively than its premise promises.
What is Fly Me to the Moon about?
Greg Berlanti’s 2024 comedy-drama sets a fictional romance against NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. Sony’s official film page describes marketing specialist Kelly Jones, played by Scarlett Johansson, arriving to improve NASA’s public image. Her work complicates the already demanding job of launch director Cole Davis, played by Channing Tatum.
The story adds a fictional contingency plan: if the real mission fails, Kelly is ordered to stage and film a mock moon landing in a studio. That imagined scheme is a plot device, not evidence that the actual Apollo 11 landing was staged. The distinction matters because the movie uses a real historical achievement as the backdrop for an invented caper.
Why does the movie feel less propulsive than it should?
The premise can support both a workplace comedy and a romantic sparring match, but the film keeps changing its comic register. It moves among comedy, slapstick, melodrama, romance and farce without settling into a rhythm that makes those shifts feel inevitable. Space.com’s review also points to this tonal sprawl as a weakness.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The Los Angeles Times review, published July 12, 2024, argues that the film needed a sharper, more propulsive ride. That criticism fits the central problem: the story has a deadline, a major public event and a questionable backup scheme, yet its momentum can ebb as it juggles them. The romance and publicity plot do not always build toward the same comic payoff, while the conspiracy premise threatens to become more absorbing than the relationship at the center.
Do Johansson and Tatum have chemistry?
Yes—their antagonistic banter is one of the film’s clearest strengths. Variety’s review highlights the leads’ space-age sparring and chemistry. Johansson gives Kelly a confident promotional polish, while Tatum plays Cole as a more restrained mission professional. Their contrasting energies make the attraction legible even when the surrounding story is less sure of its tone.

That chemistry is a genuine counterweight to the film’s uneven construction, not a cure for it. The leads can make an exchange land; they cannot always make the movie’s different genres feel like parts of one coherent ride.

It is worth considering if Johansson and Tatum’s pairing, or a fictional romance in the Apollo-era setting, is the draw. Viewers looking for a brisk comedy with a consistent tone may find it frustrating: the film’s central ingredients are appealing, but the pacing and shifts in mode keep them from building into a satisfying whole.

For a viewer choosing on the strength of the premise alone, the key distinction is between historical setting and historical claim. The Apollo 11 mission is real; Kelly’s staged backup landing is not.
