Plants can preserve clues that connect a person, object or event to a place. In three notable investigations, experts compared wood anatomy, plant DNA and plant growth evidence to test specific claims. Each method helped address a different question—and none should be mistaken for proof of guilt on its own.
What forensic botany can reveal
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew defines forensic botany as “the use of plants in criminal investigations.” Traces may include leaves, flowers, pollen, seeds, wood, fruit, spores, fungal material and evidence about plant environments. Small particles can transfer to clothing or objects and persist, giving investigators material to examine for clues about where it came from or how and when it was encountered. Kew’s overview of plant forensics explains the field and its methods.
There is no single test for every botanical trace. Microscopy can help characterize a sample; DNA analysis may be used on whole plants or fragments such as leaves and wood; and plant extracts may call for chemical analysis. Kew describes liquid chromatography fingerprinting and comparison against an in-house chemical database. Identification is only one step: recognizing a plant does not, by itself, establish where or when a trace was deposited.
Three cases, three kinds of botanical evidence
| Case | Material and method | Question addressed | What the evidence did not establish alone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lindbergh kidnapping | Ladder wood compared with a floorboard through annual rings and wood patterns | Whether the ladder wood could be associated with material from Bruno Richard Hauptmann’s attic | Guilt or the full circumstances of the crime |
| Arizona murder investigation | Palo Verde seed pods identified and their genetic profile compared with a damaged tree | Whether the truck’s plant material was linked to a tree associated with the body’s location | The complete account of the crime or guilt by itself |
| Casey Anthony trial | Plant-growth evidence raised by the defense | Whether the prosecution’s timeline for how long Caylee Anthony’s body had been in the woods was open to challenge | A conclusive resolution of the disputed timeline |
Wood anatomy in the Lindbergh kidnapping
A homemade ladder was left at the scene of the 1932 kidnapping. University of Vermont Extension recounts that wood technologist Arthur Koehler compared the ladder’s annual rings and patterns with a floorboard from Bruno Richard Hauptmann’s attic. Oxford University Press describes the case as an early use of botanical evidence in court. The comparison helped connect the ladder to material associated with Hauptmann’s home; it was one strand of the case, not a finding that should be treated as independently determining the verdict. University of Vermont Extension’s account and Oxford University Press’s book page describe the case.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Palo Verde seed DNA in an Arizona investigation
In an Arizona murder investigation, seed pods found in a suspect’s truck were identified as Palo Verde. A published case summary reports that the pods’ genetic profile matched a damaged Palo Verde tree associated with the place where the victim’s body was found. The logic has two parts: identify the plant material, then compare it with a possible source. The reported match linked the vehicle to the scene; it is not a standalone account of the investigation or proof of guilt. The published case summary on botanical DNA evidence describes the comparison.
Plant growth and the Casey Anthony trial
University of Vermont Extension reports that, in the 2011 trial, the defense used plant-growth evidence to challenge the prosecution’s timeline for how long Caylee Anthony’s body had been in the woods. This is a report of a defense argument about the timeline, not evidence that botanical analysis conclusively settled the disputed question. It illustrates how plant evidence can test a specific part of an account without resolving the whole case. The University of Vermont Extension article recounts the claim.

Why the method must fit the trace
Different samples preserve different kinds of information. Wood anatomy can support a source comparison; DNA can help compare biological material with a candidate plant; and growth patterns may be used to examine a timeline claim. Chemical analysis is relevant to plant extracts, while microscopy and DNA typing can be used with seeds. The right method depends on what survives in the sample and on the question investigators are asking.
A 2020 National Institute of Justice summary of research by Lee, Huang, Hsu and Lee describes experiments with tomato seeds: DNA suitable for AFLP analysis was recovered from uncooked seeds, while cooking destroyed seed DNA; microscopy could distinguish cooked from uncooked seeds. Those results concern the study’s tomato-seed experiments, not every plant trace or processing condition. The National Institute of Justice summary provides the study details.

How to interpret a botanical clue
- Separate identification from association. Naming a species does not prove that a trace came from a particular tree, site or moment. A comparison with a possible source is a further step.
- Ask what proposition was tested. A match may support a connection between an object and a location; growth evidence may challenge a timeline. Neither automatically answers every question in a criminal case.
- Keep the evidence in context. Plant traces are most useful as part of an investigation’s broader record, alongside other evidence and competing explanations.
