Flor Gil describes Melíflua as a chance to bring her own voice and generational perspective to Brazilian classics without either radically changing them or copying earlier interpretations. In a December 5, 2025 interview with POPline, she said the songs had been developed while she was making her debut album, Cinema Love, but were eventually set aside. The five-track EP gathers those reinterpretations alongside “Saudade,” an instrumental interlude connected to the debut.
Why Flor Gil made Melíflua
Flor told POPline that the songs on the EP were part of the creative work around Cinema Love, her first album. “Essas músicas são clássicos que acompanham a minha vida e a cultura brasileira… Fiz ao longo do meu primeiro disco; elas iam entrar nele e acabaram ficando de lado.”

In her account, Melíflua gives that material a distinct place rather than treating it as an extension of the debut. She described the EP as a more exposed, voice-forward step, exploring a vocal quality she felt she had not brought out on Cinema Love.
How she approaches the Brazilian classics
Flor said she did not want to remake the songs beyond recognition, but also did not want to reproduce earlier recordings exactly. Her aim was to make the interpretations her own through her voice, point of view, personality, and generation:

“Eu não queria mudar as músicas, sabe? Eu queria só interpretar ela com a minha voz e dar o meu toque, o meu olhar, a minha personalidade. Sem esse esforço, e também sem o esforço de copiar tudo igual, deixar tudo igual. É um conjunto da minha personalidade, da minha era, da minha geração.”
The result, as she frames it, is a balance between honoring familiar songs and making room for her own identity as a performer. That is her stated intention, rather than a claim that the originals have been replaced or substantially transformed.

Recording with her grandfather, Gilberto Gil
Gilberto Gil contributes guitar to “Duplo Sentido” and “Corcovado.” Flor described recording with her grandfather as a meaningful experience and said he helped give the EP a delicate, sophisticated sound. “Gravar com o meu avô foi uma experiência muito legal. Ele deixou a estrutura sonora do EP delicada e sofisticada. Fiquei muito feliz porque ele quis muito gravar essa música e fez um arranjo muito bonito,” she told POPline.

In the December 2025 interview, Flor spoke about plans for 2026: a freer album without a rigid sonic identity and more collaborations with artists she admires. “Quero montar um disco que seja mais livre, sem uma característica sonora muito rígida. Quero explorar mais parcerias, ter mais parcerias, ir atrás de pessoas que eu admiro,” she said. These were plans she described at the time, not confirmation of a later release or current schedule.
