Flight Risk ranked No. 1 on the domestic weekend chart for the period ending January 26, 2025, with an estimated $12 million, according to Entertainment Weekly’s report. That was a U.S. chart result—not the international or worldwide lead: Mufasa: The Lion King topped those charts.
What “No. 1” meant that weekend
The ranking referred to estimated domestic weekend grosses for the period ending January 26, 2025. Entertainment Weekly reported that Flight Risk opened on Friday, January 24, with $4.4 million, a figure it attributed to Comscore, and finished the weekend at an estimated $12 million. The Friday amount is one day’s gross; the $12 million is the reported weekend estimate.
The report’s domestic top five were:
| Domestic rank | Film | Reported weekend gross |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Flight Risk | Estimated $12 million |
| 2 | Mufasa: The Lion King | Estimated $8.7 million |
| 3 | One of Them Days | $8 million |
| 4 | Sonic the Hedgehog 3 | $5.5 million |
| 5 | Moana 2 | $4.3 million |
These are the grosses as reported at the time, not final tallies or current chart positions. The report gives estimates for Flight Risk and Mufasa; it does not label the other three figures as estimates.
Why the domestic winner was not the worldwide winner
Weekend rankings depend on the territory being counted. Flight Risk led the reported domestic chart, while Mufasa: The Lion King led the international and global charts in the same report. A No. 1 domestic debut therefore did not mean Flight Risk had the largest worldwide weekend.

Why the weekend was described as sluggish
“Sluggish” was the report’s characterization of the overall weekend. One comparison it cited was Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which had opened to a reported $62 million in December—far above Flight Risk’s estimated $12 million weekend. The article also described the period as weaker than the comparable weekend a year earlier, but the figures supplied here do not quantify that year-over-year gap.
What the reported gross says—and does not say—about performance
Entertainment Weekly put Flight Risk’s budget at $25 million and its global gross at $16.2 million at the time of publication. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not a profit calculation: gross revenue is not the same as money returned to the studio, and the report does not supply distribution terms or all production and release costs. The weekend’s chart position alone cannot establish whether the film ultimately made money.
