No: Dong Nguyen, creator of the original Flappy Bird, said he had no connection to the relaunch and had not sold anything. In a post dated September 15, 2024, he wrote, “No, I have no related with their game. I did not sell anything. I also don’t support crypto.” GameSpot reproduced the statement the following day. The Flappy Bird Foundation called its project an “official” return, but that branding does not establish Nguyen’s involvement or endorsement.
Did the original creator approve the new game?
Nguyen publicly disavowed involvement in the relaunch. His statement addresses his relationship to the project and whether he sold anything; he said he had no connection and had not sold anything. It is the clearest answer to whether he approved or participated: he said he did not have a relationship with the game.
The Foundation’s use of “official” is a separate claim. The organization promoted the return in connection with trademark rights, and contemporary reporting said it acquired the mark from Gametech Holdings. Trademark claims and creator endorsement are not interchangeable: the Foundation’s branding does not show that Nguyen joined or supported the project. GameSpot’s report reproduces Nguyen’s post, while Europa Press covered the Foundation’s relaunch claims.
What does “official” mean in this dispute?
The word appears in the Foundation’s presentation of its return, which it tied to trademark rights. That does not answer every question about the history or ownership of the mark, nor does it override Nguyen’s statement about his own involvement.

A September 29, 2023 filing in the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board names Gametech Holdings, LLC as opposer and Dong Nguyen Ha as applicant in a FLAPPYBIRD matter. The notice lists abandonment among the grounds asserted. It is a procedural filing recording allegations, not a final ruling that resolves the entire trademark history. The TTAB record should be read on those terms.
What happened, and when?
- September 29, 2023: The TTAB record shows a notice of opposition involving Gametech Holdings and Dong Nguyen Ha, with abandonment among the asserted grounds. It is not itself a final judgment.
- September 2024: The Flappy Bird Foundation announced a comeback and described its project as the “official” return. Contemporary reporting said it had acquired the mark from Gametech Holdings.
- September 15, 2024: Nguyen posted that he had no connection to the game, had not sold anything, and did not support crypto. GameSpot reproduced his wording on September 16.
- April 29, 2025: An Android version appeared on the Epic Games Store. The listing identifies Flappy Bird Publishing PTE. LTD. as publisher.
What is known about crypto and Web3?
The 2024 announcement raised crypto questions. Europa Press reported that a Foundation site page referred to Solana and Web3, while noting that it was unclear whether those plans had been removed, were being tested, or were intended for later. Nguyen’s statement that he did not support crypto describes his position; it does not, by itself, establish the project’s technical features.

At the April 2025 Android launch, GameSpot reported the developer’s statement that the app had “no Web3 elements.” The Foundation’s Telegram channel later said there was no official Flappy Bird token and warned that purported official Web3 games were unaffiliated. Those are statements attributed to the developer and Foundation at that time, not proof of what every future plan may include. GameSpot’s launch report and the Foundation’s Telegram channel provide that later context.
