Fix YouTube Live Streams That Disconnect Every Few Hours From a VPS

A stream that drops after a few hours does not point to one universal cause. Use timestamps, YouTube health messages, encoder logs, and VPS network data to isolate it.

A YouTube Live stream that drops after several hours has no single known, universal cause. The elapsed time alone does not prove a YouTube timeout or a VPS defect. First establish whether the encoder stopped sending, YouTube lost ingest, or viewers merely lost playback; then match the failure timestamp against encoder logs, YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and VPS network and resource events.

Start by locating where the stream failed

The important connection is the one from the encoder running on your VPS to YouTube’s ingest server. A VPS dashboard showing a fast network port does not establish that this outbound path can sustain your chosen stream profile continuously. Likewise, a stream that usually fails after a similar number of hours is a timing clue, not proof of a scheduled timeout.

Record the failure before changing settings

  • Write down the failure time in UTC and the stream’s elapsed run time.
  • Check whether the encoder stopped, attempted to reconnect, or continued sending while YouTube reported an ingest problem.
  • Save the encoder’s log lines around the event and note any CPU, memory, or process changes on the VPS.
  • Record the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room and any contemporaneous VPS provider alerts, maintenance notices, or network metrics.
  • Keep stream keys and other credentials out of logs or support tickets you share.

Separate a broadcast failure from a viewer-side problem

Check whether the broadcast ended for everyone or whether reports come from one viewer, viewers on one network, or viewers on multiple networks. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes these patterns and recommends checking the encoder, stream appearance and sound, CPU load, local archive, and outbound connection strength. If the encoder appears healthy but the broadcast has trouble, investigate the outbound network path rather than assuming the encoder itself failed. See YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide.

Match YouTube’s health message to the encoder settings

Use the issue YouTube actually displays as a lead. The Live API health categories include bitrate that is too high or low, unsupported codecs, frame-rate problems, keyframe frequency, missing or multiple audio/video streams, and mismatches between primary and backup streams. YouTube notes that keyframe intervals above four seconds can cause buffering; that does not mean a keyframe setting is responsible for every stream that disconnects after hours. Review YouTube’s Live Stream health issue descriptions.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check bitrate against the profile and sustained VPS egress

YouTube’s current encoder-settings page gives these H.264 recommendations for 1080p at 60 frames per second: 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. For AV1 or H.265 at the same resolution and frame rate, it lists 4 Mbps minimum and 12 Mbps recommended. These are configuration recommendations, not measurements of the cause of your disconnection. Confirm which codec, resolution, and frame rate your encoder is actually sending, then compare its selected bitrate with sustained outbound capacity and observed drops. A short speed test does not establish reliable delivery over a multi-hour broadcast.

Check keyframes, rate control, codec, and stream consistency

  • YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds.
  • Confirm that the encoder is using a video codec YouTube supports and that the selected frame rate and bitrate fit the actual resolution and codec.
  • Check that the expected audio and video streams are present and that a configured primary/backup arrangement is consistent.
  • Use YouTube’s displayed health issue, rather than changing unrelated settings based only on the timing of the failure.

YouTube’s encoder settings guide covers bitrate, resolution, keyframes, protocol, testing, and stream health. OBS’s troubleshooting guide suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed as a general bitrate starting point. That is OBS guidance, not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee for a VPS; sustained outbound performance and the stream’s own observed health matter more than treating that ratio as a rule.

Verify the ingest URL, key, and RTMPS connection

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, retrieve the current server URL and stream key for the broadcast.
  2. Check that the VPS encoder is using those current values and supports the selected protocol.
  3. Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends it as the secure extension of RTMP. If you see an SSL error, verify the server and protocol are set to RTMPS; YouTube says port 443 can be specified if needed.
  4. If the encoder reports “failed to connect to server — connection timed out,” check the URL and confirm RTMPS support. A timeout check can help with connection failures, but does not by itself explain a disconnect that occurs hours into a stream.

YouTube’s RTMPS instructions cover the endpoint, key, protocol, and connection checks. Do not assume that changing protocol will necessarily resolve a recurring disconnect.

Investigate the VPS network and process at the failure time

OBS characterizes dropped frames or intermittent disconnections as a network issue between the encoder and remote ingest server. Its guide also identifies unstable connectivity, bitrate beyond what the connection can sustain, firewall or security software, VPNs, network-optimization software, and network or hardware faults as possible contributors. On a VPS, focus on the host and provider evidence that applies to a server rather than desktop-only hardware checks.

Review these VPS-side signals

  • Outbound network graphs and any evidence of packet loss, throughput drops, or route changes near the recorded timestamp.
  • Firewall rules and provider egress restrictions that could interrupt the encoder’s connection.
  • CPU, memory, process, and system events that might have stalled or restarted the encoder.
  • Provider maintenance, network events, resource limits, or support notices that coincide with the drop.
  • VPN or network-optimization software in the VPS path, if installed.

If the evidence points to an unstable route or a sustained-capacity issue, ask the VPS provider to investigate the specific timestamp and outbound path to YouTube ingest. OBS recommends testing another ingest server where available, lowering bitrate when the connection cannot sustain it, and reviewing connection settings. A VPS migration is only a sensible next step if the records implicate the current host or path. Read OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guidance.

Make one evidence-based change, then run a long test

  1. Keep a baseline of the encoder profile, endpoint, health messages, logs, and VPS metrics.
  2. Choose one change that corresponds to evidence—for example, reducing bitrate if sustained outbound delivery is insufficient, or correcting a URL/protocol error.
  3. Run a private or unlisted preflight with realistic audio and motion, and monitor YouTube stream health while it is live.
  4. Keep the logs and provider metrics. If the usual failure interval is several hours, run the test long enough to exceed that interval before judging the change.
  5. Compare the new failure time, encoder behavior, health messages, and network records with the baseline before changing another variable.

This method helps isolate causes; it is not a guarantee that any particular setting will fix the stream. YouTube recommends realistic preflight content and monitoring stream health during a test.
