FFmpeg’s “Broken pipe” message means a write to its output connection failed; it does not, by itself, explain why. YouTube’s ingest, the network path, FFmpeg’s output, or another part of the setup could be involved. Match the time of the first error in FFmpeg’s log to YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages before changing settings. That gives you evidence to troubleshoot instead of guessing.
What “Broken pipe” means—and what it does not
FFmpeg reports a broken pipe when a write to its output connection fails. The message is a symptom, not a root-cause diagnosis: it does not prove YouTube caused the failure, that your internet connection dropped, or that a particular encoder setting is wrong. The precise cause depends on the system and ingest configuration. FFmpeg’s muxer documentation covers output recovery controls, while YouTube’s Live streaming error messages page describes ingest and stream-configuration errors; neither assigns one universal cause to every FFmpeg-to-YouTube broken pipe.
Before restarting, preserve the evidence needed to distinguish an FFmpeg process exit, a failed output write, and an input loop that may still be running:
- The complete FFmpeg command, with the stream key and any other secrets removed.
- The full log surrounding the first error—not only the final line—and the FFmpeg version and build information.
- The time the error occurred and how long the stream ran before it.
- YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages that match that time.
Troubleshoot in an evidence-first order

Find out what stopped
Save the log before restarting. Check whether FFmpeg exited, whether the output write failed, and whether the input loop continued. Those are separate observations; a loop in the input does not guarantee that the connection sending its output remains usable.

Match the error to YouTube’s stream health
Open the stream’s Live Control Room health report and compare its error timestamps with the first FFmpeg error. YouTube distinguishes critical from moderate errors and can report problems involving format, bitrate, audio or video settings, keyframe frequency, resolution, or consistency between primary and backup streams. Correct the specific issue YouTube reports rather than changing unrelated flags. See YouTube’s error-message guidance.

Check the encoder settings against this ingest configuration
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, video codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR bitrate encoding, a recommended 2-second keyframe frequency, and a 4-second maximum. These are not a single universal preset: use the selected ingest configuration and the precise Live Control Room error to determine what applies. For the “Incorrect stream format” error it describes, YouTube calls for H.264 video and AAC audio; its guidance also covers audio channel and sample-rate checks. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings page and the message shown for your stream.

Verify the destination and port
YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm the configured endpoint and port against the current YouTube and encoder instructions; Google notes that an SSL error can result from connecting to the wrong port. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide. Never paste a live stream key into a log, public post, or support request.

Consider FFmpeg output recovery only after recording a baseline
FFmpeg documents muxer recovery controls such as
attempt_recovery,recovery_wait_time, andrecover_any_error, including an RTMP example that continues at real-time rate while attempting recovery. These controls concern output recovery; they do not fix every failure or guarantee seamless, frame-accurate resumption, and they cannot guarantee that YouTube will keep the same event open. Depending on configuration, recovery can drop or delay media. Check the muxer documentation for your installed FFmpeg release before using an option: support and behavior can vary by release and build.The Tool Desk

Test one change at a time
Before relying on a long-running loop, test it with representative audio and motion, then monitor stream health. YouTube recommends testing encoder settings and monitoring the stream during the event. Change one setting at a time and compare the resulting FFmpeg log and YouTube health report so you can tell whether the change addressed the observed problem.
Choose a fix that matches the evidence

No single command or flag is established as the best fix for every broken-pipe failure. Choose based on what the local log and timestamp-matched YouTube health report actually show, and confirm that any FFmpeg option is supported by your installed build.
