If FFmpeg stops when it reaches a Devanagari filename, first identify how that filename reaches FFmpeg. A direct input path, an FFmpeg concat script, and another playlist format are different cases. If your playlist is a concat script and FFmpeg reports that a path is unsafe, the documented fix for a trusted local playlist is to add -safe 0 before its -i input. That option does not fix a misspelled path or incompatible media.
Start by identifying where the filename fails
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text script containing file directives. Its path rules and -safe option apply only when you are using that demuxer; they are not universal fixes for every playlist or for every Unicode filename. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a Devanagari-specific defect, and the cause cannot be identified without the playlist type, invocation, and full error.
- Check the exact path. Confirm the file exists where FFmpeg expects it. Compare the filename and directory character by character, including the extension, spelling, and any spaces. If an application launches FFmpeg, check that it passes the intended path.
- Identify the input type. Determine whether the input is a concat script, another playlist format, or a single media file supplied directly to FFmpeg. Use concat-specific settings only for a concat script.
- Read the full error. A message about opening a file or an unsafe name points to a different layer than an error after the file opens. Preserve the complete output rather than treating every failure as a filename problem.
If your installed version behaves differently from the documented options below, check it with ffmpeg -version. No version or operating system is specified here.
Fix a Devanagari path in an FFmpeg concat script
The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1. In that mode, it rejects paths containing characters outside its documented portable-character set. For a concat script you trust, -safe 0 disables that filename restriction. Keep the option before the corresponding -i, because it configures that input.

Check the script syntax
A minimal example for a trusted local playlist is:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'गीत.mp4'
file 'अगला गीत.mp4'The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0 and must not have a byte-order mark. In the script, special characters and spaces in paths must be escaped with a backslash or enclosed in single quotes. Confirm the entries match the real filenames and their locations.
Run FFmpeg with the safe-path check disabled
ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.txt -c copy output.mp4This example uses the concat demuxer and stream copy. It is not a universal output command: the input streams and codecs must suit the output container and the rest of your workflow. Use -safe 0 only when you trust the playlist content; it allows any filename rather than applying the default path restriction.

If the file opens but the stream still stops
Opening a path successfully does not guarantee that the media can be concatenated. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires the inputs to have the same streams, codecs, and time base. If the error changes after applying the path fix, diagnose the new error rather than repeating the filename change.
- File-open or unsafe-path error: Recheck the exact path and whether the input really is a concat script. For a trusted concat script, verify the quoting and option placement, then try
-safe 0before-i. - Failure after the file opens: Check the full FFmpeg output for format, stream, codec, or time-base incompatibilities among the playlist entries.
- Container or codec error: Container readability and codec support are separate issues. A readable container does not establish that the required codec is supported or that the media is compatible with the other concat inputs.
- Path differs inside an application: Compare the path shown in the application’s FFmpeg invocation with the actual filename. The shell or application is part of the path handoff, so verify what it passes rather than assuming the visible playlist text is the exact argument received.
