There is no single confirmed fix for a black screen in an OBS stream running on an OVHcloud VPS. First find where the picture disappears: check the OBS preview, a local recording, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview in that order. A black OBS preview points toward the scene, capture source, or graphics rendering; a good local recording but bad YouTube preview points instead toward the encoder output or outbound connection.
Find where the picture turns black
Run a short test before changing settings. Compare the same scene at each stage so you can tell whether the failure is inside the VPS, in OBS’s output, or after the stream reaches YouTube.
- OBS preview: Is the intended image visible in the active scene?
- Local recording: Record a short sample and play the saved file. Does it contain the image?
- YouTube Live Control Room: Check the preview and any stream-health or encoder messages.
- Public watch page: If the control-room preview is healthy, check whether public playback behaves differently.
YouTube recommends checking source quality, encoder errors, CPU load, a local archive, and outbound connectivity when troubleshooting stream quality. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube does not receive it properly, test the outbound route; if the source or encoder output itself looks wrong, investigate that path first. If the OBS preview or local recording is black
Verify the scene and source in the VPS session
- Confirm the intended source is in the active scene and is visible rather than hidden or covered by another source.
- Check that the target display, window, game, browser, or media source actually exists in the VPS guest session. A window on your own computer is not automatically available to OBS running on the server.
- Identify the exact source type, guest operating system and version, and OBS version before changing capture methods or graphics settings.
- Review the OBS log and the guest’s visible graphics devices. These details help distinguish a missing capture target from a rendering or compatibility problem.
OBS lists DirectX 10.1-compatible graphics for Windows and OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics for Linux/Unix as minimum requirements, but meeting those baselines does not guarantee streaming or recording capability. OBS Studio system requirements

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For Windows display capture, check supported versions
OBS documents a newer Windows display-capture method for Windows 10 version 1903 or newer with OBS 27 or newer. If display capture fails, its guide suggests manually selecting the Windows 10 capture method. The same guide discusses historical multi-GPU capture issues and laptop GPU preferences; do not assume a laptop-specific remedy applies to a virtual server. First establish which graphics adapters the guest sees and which display surface the source is capturing. OBS capture guidance
Separate a visible preview from a black output
If the preview is visible but the recording or stream is black, the failure is later in OBS’s output path than the source preview. Inspect the OBS log and compare a local recording with YouTube’s preview. The available guidance does not establish one specific cause for this VPS setup, so avoid swapping drivers, plugins, or GPU preferences without evidence from the OS, source type, OBS version, and log.

Check rendering and encoding load only when there is evidence of overload
OBS uses GPU time to compose and render scenes. A complex scene or other GPU-intensive work can leave too little capacity for OBS; the OBS performance guide recommends reducing workload when rendering or encoding overload is reported. Check OBS statistics or logs and guest CPU/GPU utilization. If they show overload, simplify the scene or reduce output demand, then repeat the local recording test. These steps address demonstrated performance pressure; overload is not a proven explanation for every black screen. OBS encoding performance troubleshooting
If the local recording is good but YouTube is black
Check YouTube’s preview, health messages, and network path
Compare the local file with the Live Control Room preview, then review stream-health messages, encoder errors, and CPU load. If the local file is healthy but the outbound stream is not, test available upload capacity and the route from the VPS to YouTube. If OBS cannot start the stream, verify that it is using the intended stream key. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes source or encoder problems from outbound connectivity issues. Use settings that match the chosen profile
For standard RTMP/RTMPS streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, CBR bitrate mode, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Audio options include AAC or MP3. Choose a bitrate for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you have actually selected; there is no single bitrate that fixes every black stream. For example, YouTube’s recommendations include these H.264 profiles:
| Profile | Recommended bitrate | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps | YouTube Help, publication date not shown; accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | YouTube Help, publication date not shown; accessed 2026-10-03 |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps | YouTube Help, publication date not shown; accessed 2026-10-03 |
These are configuration recommendations for the matching profiles, not universal fixes for a black screen. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the codec and resolution you use.

Test before relying on the stream
YouTube recommends testing before an event with similar movement and audio, checking the Live Control Room preview before starting the broadcast, and monitoring audio and video quality while live. A brief test can reveal a black or degraded feed without relying on the public watch page alone. YouTube live-stream tips

“OVHcloud VPS” does not identify a specific offer, operating system, region, or graphics device. The OVHcloud documentation cited here describes Public Cloud GPU instances, not proof that an existing VPS has GPU passthrough. OVHcloud says PCI passthrough lets the guest OS control the GPU. Its GPU support guidance identifies model and image requirements, including Windows image requirements for NVIDIA GPU instances. Consider a GPU-capable instance only if diagnosis shows that the current guest lacks graphics capability needed by the specific capture or encoding setup. A GPU does not correct a hidden or unavailable source, a mismatched capture method, or a YouTube ingest problem.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to check next |
|---|---|
| OBS preview and local recording are black | Active scene and source visibility; whether the target display/window/game exists in the VPS session; OS, source type, OBS version, graphics devices, and OBS log. |
| OBS preview is visible, local recording is black | Inspect the OBS log and output path; compare source and recording behavior before changing drivers or capture methods. |
| Local recording is good, YouTube preview is black or unhealthy | Live Control Room health messages, encoder errors, stream key if OBS will not start, and outbound upload/network route. |
| OBS reports rendering or encoding overload | Check CPU/GPU utilization; reduce scene complexity or output demand, then record another local test. |
| YouTube preview is healthy, public playback differs | Compare the control-room preview and watch page; the available guidance does not establish a specific cause for this VPS case. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously rather than diagnose an OBS capture setup, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
