Indian independent music spans far more than one sound. These five starting points range from folk-rock and an evolving Pune ensemble to Hindi indie rock, a newly promoted album, and a Chennai alternative band recommended in older coverage. Start with a song or album that fits your mood, then follow the artist’s official links to explore further.

Swarathma: folk-rock with a sense of place
Swarathma describes itself as an Indian folk-rock band. For a warm introduction, try “Belongaluru,” which the band presents as a love song to Bengaluru. If you want something more pointed, “BAS” is described on its official site as a satire about artists’ silence in challenging times. Both are currently featured there; no release date is established by that listing.
The band’s site also foregrounds live concerts and acoustic performances, making it a useful place to explore beyond the two suggested tracks. Visit Swarathma’s official site for its current listening links.
Easy Wanderlings: a sound that keeps widening
The Pune band formed in 2015. In a September 2026 interview with Homegrown, its members described moving from earlier folk and indie-pop sensibilities toward soul, funk, and broader arrangements. “Mellow,” a collaboration with singer-songwriter Mali (Maalavika Manoj), is the entry point for a gentler listen. The band’s official biography says an album is expected in 2027; that is a current expectation, not a confirmed release date.
The interview was published during the band’s “Ten Years on the Map” tour, which included cafés, heritage art spaces, and intimate listening events, including a Bring Your Own Headphones show in Pune. Sanyanth Naroth, songwriter, guitarist, and founding member, described the ambition this way: “The goal was simple: to take our music as far and wide as we possibly could.” Read the Homegrown interview and follow its link to the band’s current profile.
Peter Cat Recording Co.: let an album do the introducing
The band’s official website currently presents Beta (बेटा) as a new album and marks it out now. Rather than attach a genre description not established by that page, start with the album and let its track sequence introduce the group. The site also has a store link, but the available information here does not establish a particular physical format, price, or retail listing.

Alchemy: Hindi lyrics and guitar-led indie rock
Mumbai-based Alchemy describes itself as a Hindi indie-rock band, with Hindi lyrics, guitars, and storytelling at the centre of its sound. Its official site lists six songs; “Sakhi Tore Naina,” “Aao Suno,” and “Kyun” are three clear places to begin. Choose one and see whether you want more of its language-forward, guitar-led approach.

The F16s: a promising pick with older evidence
A 2021 5X Press feature described The F16s as a Chennai alternative band active since 2012 and recommended “Moonchild” and “Jacuzzi.” Those tracks are a grounded way into the feature’s recommendation, but that article is five years old as of 2026. It does not establish the band’s present activity, current release availability, or preferred listening destination.
Read the 5X Press feature, then check the band’s own channels for current information before treating it as an up-to-date activity listing.

“Indie” is a broad route into independent music, not a single style. These picks offer different textures and cultural references: Swarathma’s folk-rock and Bengaluru affection, Easy Wanderlings’ changing ensemble palette, Alchemy’s Hindi guitar-led rock, and an album-first listen for Peter Cat Recording Co. The F16s recommendation is useful, but rests on older coverage.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use the artists’ official pages for listening links; platform catalogs and availability can differ by country.
- For an especially attentive listen, headphones are an option—Easy Wanderlings’ 2026 tour even included a Bring Your Own Headphones event, though that does not establish any particular headphone as superior.
- Streaming is convenient. Concert attendance or buying through an artist’s official store may support artists more directly, but the share received by an artist depends on arrangements not established here.
A near-identical Scroll headline appeared on April 30, 2017, recommending Begum, Run! It’s the Kid, Lawntuba, The Ritornellos, and Yesterdrive. That older list is useful title history, not proof that those acts remain active; the five recommendations above draw on more recent official information where available and label older evidence where it matters.
