Firebreak—the 2026 Spanish thriller originally titled Cortafuego—is now streaming on Netflix. It follows a grieving mother searching for her missing eight-year-old daughter as a wildfire closes in and family tensions raise the possibility that someone is lying.
Firebreak—released in Spanish as Cortafuego—is a 2026 Netflix mystery thriller about a missing child, a fast-moving wildfire, and a family whose private tensions become as dangerous as the flames outside. It premiered on February 20, 2026, runs for 1 hour 47 minutes (107 minutes), and is currently available to stream Firebreak on Netflix.
Directed by David Victori, the film is best understood as a psychological thriller with survival pressure, rather than as a conventional disaster movie. The wildfire creates the countdown, but the central mystery is what happened to eight-year-old Lide—and whether everyone in her family is telling the truth.
What is Firebreak about?
Mara, played by Belén Cuesta, takes her eight-year-old daughter Lide and several relatives to a forest house after the death of Mara’s husband. The family is preparing the property for sale, so the trip already carries practical and emotional strain: they have to deal with the house, their loss, and one another.

Then Lide disappears after an argument.
The search becomes urgent when a wildfire breaks out nearby. Authorities eventually suspend the search and order an evacuation, but Mara refuses to leave without finding her daughter. As the fire advances, she must make decisions under extreme pressure while trying to work out whether Lide’s disappearance has been misunderstood—or whether someone in the family is concealing something important.
That is the film’s spoiler-safe hook: Mara is not only racing against the wildfire. She is also trying to separate grief, panic, family conflict, and possible deception before the situation becomes impossible to reverse.
Why the thriller feels so intense
Firebreak builds its tension from two threats that keep tightening around Mara.
- The external deadline: the wildfire is spreading, evacuation is ordered, and the official search cannot continue indefinitely.
- The internal uncertainty: Mara’s desperation clashes with family disagreements and the possibility that somebody knows more than they are admitting.
The combination gives the film a contained, pressure-cooker quality. The setting is relatively limited, but the possible explanations keep multiplying. A missing-person story naturally asks who is responsible and where the missing person could be. A wildfire adds a second set of questions: how long is there to search, which routes remain open, and what evidence might disappear as the landscape changes?

It is not primarily interested in spectacular fire imagery or large-scale rescue operations. Its more important conflict is the way fear changes the family’s behavior and Mara’s interpretation of every conversation.
The story setup, without the ending
Mara arrives at the family’s forest summer house with Lide and relatives including Luis, Elena, and their son Dani. The property is being prepared for sale, which makes the gathering feel less like a carefree holiday than an unwanted meeting shaped by bereavement and unfinished family business.

After Lide vanishes, the family’s relationships become part of the mystery. The circumstances surrounding the argument, the different accounts of what happened, and the group’s shifting priorities all matter. When the authorities suspend the search because of the wildfire and order everyone to evacuate, Mara’s refusal to give up turns the search into a direct confrontation with both the emergency and her relatives.
Local forest ranger Santi becomes especially important once the official search is suspended. He is the family’s principal remaining source of practical help as the fire changes what is safe and possible. His knowledge of the area gives Mara an ally, but it does not make the underlying mystery simple.

Cast and characters
- Belén Cuesta as Mara: the grieving mother whose search for Lide drives the film.
- Candela Martínez as Lide: Mara’s eight-year-old daughter, whose disappearance sets the story in motion.
- Joaquín Furriel as Luis: Mara’s brother-in-law and a member of the family group caught in the crisis.
- Diana Gómez as Elena: Luis’s wife, whose place in the fractious family adds to the film’s uncertainty.
- Enric Auquer as Santi: the local forest ranger who becomes Mara’s main source of help after the official search is suspended.
- Mika Arias as Dani: Elena and Luis’s son.
Netflix’s promotional material may make the cast especially recognizable to viewers who know Cuesta and Gómez from Money Heist, Auquer from Sky Rojo, or Furriel from other Netflix productions. Those connections are useful signposts, but the actors are not reprising their earlier characters here. Firebreak gives them a different kind of material: an intimate family thriller in which suspicion is as important as physical danger.
Is Firebreak a disaster movie?
Only partly. The wildfire is essential to the plot, but calling Firebreak a pure disaster movie would misrepresent its focus. Netflix positions it across several overlapping categories: Spanish-language drama, mystery, thriller, suspense, and race-against-time storytelling.
The film’s core is the disappearance of a child and the family’s inability to agree about what happened. The wildfire supplies urgency, limits the available search area, and forces evacuation decisions. It is the pressure mechanism surrounding the mystery rather than the entire subject of the movie.

- Spanish-language suspense dramas.
How twist-heavy is it?
The “packed with twists” description is fair as a guide to the film’s structure and marketing: the story is built around reversals, suspicion, and changing interpretations of the disappearance. It is safer, however, to expect escalating doubt than to assume that every twist will surprise every viewer.
The effectiveness of that approach will depend on how much patience a viewer has for characters making stressful, emotionally charged decisions. Mara is grieving, frightened, and unwilling to accept the authorities’ decision to stop searching. Her desperation is the engine of the film, but it can also make her choices—and the choices of those around her—feel deliberately divisive.
Reception: an intense but divisive Netflix watch
Firebreak has received a mixed early response. At the time of the research snapshot used for this article, Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 32% from eight critics, with the audience score in the 50% range. That is a small sample and may change as more reviews and ratings arrive, so it should not be treated as a settled audience consensus.

The disagreement is understandable from the available critical response. Some reviews highlight the performances and the steadily escalating tension. Others object to the setup, the characters’ decisions, or the way the thriller executes its ideas.
The most balanced expectation is this: Firebreak is an efficient, high-concept Netflix thriller that could work well as a fast weekend watch for viewers drawn to missing-child mysteries and family suspicion. Its divided reception also suggests that the twists and character behavior will not work equally well for everyone. It is better approached as a tense, potentially polarizing genre film than as an established critical hit.

Where to watch Firebreak
Firebreak is streaming on Netflix now. Netflix presents the film as available to watch and supports offline downloading in supported territories. The exact catalog listing, age rating, audio tracks, subtitles, and download options can vary by country, so viewers should check the Netflix listing available in their region rather than assume that every territory offers identical language options.
The film’s original Spanish title is Cortafuego. If a search for “Firebreak” does not immediately produce the expected result, searching Netflix for the Spanish title may help, particularly in regions where the original title is displayed more prominently.

Should you watch Firebreak?
Watch it if you want a compact Spanish thriller that puts a missing-child mystery inside a wildfire evacuation and keeps family relationships at the center. The 107-minute runtime makes it an easy choice for a single-night viewing, and the premise offers immediate stakes without requiring knowledge of a larger franchise or fictional universe.
Approach it with more caution if you need airtight character logic, consistently plausible decisions, or a mystery whose final turns have been widely praised. The early critical response is mixed, and the film’s emotional intensity may be more persuasive to some viewers than its plotting is to others.
Either way, Firebreak is not merely a film about escaping a forest fire. It is a grief-driven missing-person thriller in which the emergency outside makes every family secret harder to ignore.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Firebreak is a 107-minute Spanish psychological thriller on Netflix that combines a missing-child mystery with an advancing wildfire and family suspicion. Its premise and performances may satisfy viewers looking for a tense weekend watch, but the small, mixed early review sample is a reason to expect a divisive rather than universally acclaimed thriller.
