Firebrand is a 2023 historical drama about Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth and last wife. Directed by Karim Aïnouz, it follows Parr as she serves as regent while Henry is abroad, advances her Protestant beliefs, and faces danger at court after he returns. The Festival de Cannes lists the film at 120 minutes and identifies Alicia Vikander as Parr and Jude Law as Henry VIII.
What is Firebrand about?
The film places Katherine Parr in a precarious position during Henry VIII’s campaign overseas. In the Festival de Cannes synopsis, Parr uses her time as regent to press for a future shaped by her Protestant beliefs. When Henry returns, he turns against religious radicals; Parr’s childhood friend is charged with treason and burned, leaving the queen fighting to survive under the king’s threat.

That is the film’s dramatic premise, as described by Cannes—not independent confirmation that every event, motive, or scene happened as shown.
Is Firebrand based on a true story?
Firebrand is a historical drama about real people, but its stated literary source is Elizabeth Fremantle’s historical novel Queen’s Gambit. Cannes describes the novel as the film’s inspiration, and Sony Pictures calls it the novel on which the film is based. It is more precise to call the film inspired by a historical novel than to describe it simply as a true story.
#1 Best Overall
The official synopsis establishes the film’s plot framing, not the historical accuracy of particular scenes or its treatment of court politics, religious policy, Anne Askew, Henry’s health, or the ending. Those questions require comparison with historical scholarship or primary records.
What book is Firebrand based on?
The source is Elizabeth Fremantle’s Queen’s Gambit, published in 2012, according to a Cannes article dated 21 May 2023. The film’s documented connection to the novel does not, by itself, establish how faithfully the adaptation reproduces its plot or characterization.
Cast, credits and festival history
Cannes lists Karim Aïnouz as director and credits Jessica Ashworth, Henrietta Ashworth and Rosanne Flynn for the screenplay. Sony’s page credits Jessica and Henrietta Ashworth, so the distributor and festival listings differ on the screenplay credits.
Rank #2
- Alicia Vikander plays Katherine Parr.
- Jude Law plays Henry VIII.
- The Cannes listing also names Eddie Marsan, Sam Riley, Erin Doherty and Simon Russell Beale.
The Festival de Cannes lists Firebrand as a United Kingdom feature in competition in 2023, with a runtime of 120 minutes. The British Council’s UK Films Database records a Cannes 2023 competition world premiere, a Karlovy Vary 2023 selection and a Tribeca 2024 selection.
