Who are Tom, Charlie and Mabel?
Tom and Charlie are brothers who grew up in different worlds and reunite as adults. Their lives in New Bedford, Massachusetts, and its commercial-fishing community become entangled with a deal involving a Boston crime syndicate. Mabel is drawn into the situation as family, friendship, and romantic relationships come under pressure. This is a spoiler-light outline based on the film’s official synopsis; it does not disclose how the story resolves.
What inspired the story?
Writer-director Brian Helgeland has said that he worked as a Massachusetts fisherman for a year after college and used personal experience to bring authenticity to the film’s fishing setting. In a first-person TIME essay, he described the crew as based on people he had fished with, and Charlie as a loose sketch of himself as a young man. He also said Mabel draws partly on his own youthful desire for a larger world. Helgeland’s account describes inspirations for the characters and setting, not a claim that the plot is a true story; he said the Boston drug dealers in the film were not something he personally experienced. His remarks were also included in Paramount Press Express’s 2022 announcement.
