In a July 2024 interview at TennoCon in London, Ontario, actor Ben Starr explained why he joined Warframe as Arthur: he was drawn to its devoted player community and to working with creative director Rebecca Ford. The conversation also turned to his memories of 1999 and a very Canadian breakfast stop.
How Ben Starr came to play Arthur in Warframe
Starr knew about Warframe through creators he respected and a documentary about the game’s history, but he had not played it before he was approached. He connected with Rebecca Ford, the game’s creative director, through their shared interest in games. Ford later invited him to audition for Arthur.
Starr said joining appealed because Warframe had a community as passionate about its game as the Final Fantasy community he knew from playing Clive Rosfield in Final Fantasy XVI. He described the opportunity as feeling like “a no-brainer.”
He and Ford’s team worked together to shape Arthur’s voice and personality. Starr characterized the character as direct, with the quality of a squad leader, while the creative process also looked for ways to make him approachable and human. The interview touched on romanceable characters and player customization as part of the then-upcoming Warframe: 1999 update; these were comments about the project in July 2024, not a guide to the game’s current features. Why 1999 felt personal to Starr
Starr was 11 in 1999 and described it as a formative year. Reflecting on the setting and its Y2K atmosphere, he recalled both anxiety about the millennium and a feeling of renewal and possibility. The period’s music and aesthetic brought back a powerful sense of nostalgia.
“I was 11 years old in 1999 — I remember it — the most formative years of my life,” Starr told MobileSyrup. Starr’s Tim Hortons story from London, Ontario
During the TennoCon visit, Starr joked that he had never seen such a high concentration of Tim Hortons as near the event, estimating that there were four within a five-minute walk. That was his personal estimate, not a verified count. He said his first visit to the chain had been in Toronto and that he was trying to visit more locations while in Canada.
