Yes—if you enjoy turn-based tactical battles, deliberate party-building and a political fantasy story, and you’re willing to learn a demanding set of systems. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles preserves the 1997 game’s strategic identity while offering an Enhanced version with voice acting and quality-of-life features alongside a Classic version. Enhanced’s Squire difficulty gives newcomers a more accessible starting point, but it does not guarantee a uniformly gentle ride.
What kind of game is The Ivalice Chronicles?
Released on September 30, 2025, Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is a single-player, turn-based tactical role-playing game. Rather than action combat, battles ask you to position units across terrain, plan turns and shape a party through character customization. Square Enix describes more than 20 jobs and more than 300 abilities, giving players a broad set of ways to develop their units. Square Enix’s announcement outlines those systems and the release platforms.
The story unfolds in the war-torn Kingdom of Ivalice after the Fifty Years’ War. Political infighting, class conflict and noble ambition shape the conflict around Ramza Beoulve, the third son of a prominent military family, and Delita, a commoner raised among nobles. The childhood companions find themselves on opposing sides.
Which version should you play?
Both versions are included, so the choice is about presentation and convenience rather than buying a separate edition.

| Version | What it offers | Good fit for |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced | Updated graphics and interface, revised and expanded dialogue, full voice acting, fast-forward, autosave, tactical view and a way to check unit turn order. It also offers Squire difficulty as a more accessible starting point. | Newcomers and players who want modern conveniences and voiced presentation. |
| Classic | A recreation of the original 1997 graphics and gameplay, paired with the War of the Lions translation. | Returning players who prefer the original presentation and gameplay. |
Square Enix describes Classic as a way to revisit the original while using the War of the Lions translation; both versions come with the game. The PlayStation.Blog announcement explains the two-version approach. The available descriptions do not establish a controlled performance comparison between the versions.
What makes the challenge worthwhile—and what makes it hard?
The appeal is the connection between battlefield decisions and character development: terrain, unit choices, jobs and abilities all give you systems to consider as you plan a fight. That depth rewards players who like to experiment and adapt rather than rely on reflexes or a single preferred attack.

That same depth can make the game demanding. In a review of the PS5 version, Harry Padoan of TechRadar reported severe difficulty spikes, including early in the game, and called out zodiac compatibility, faith and bravery as mechanics that require close attention. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a universal difficulty rating. Read the TechRadar review.
Enhanced’s Squire setting is explicitly presented as more accessible for new players, and conveniences such as fast-forward and autosave can make the experience easier to manage. They should not be mistaken for proof that every encounter is easy or that difficulty spikes disappear. If learning a tactical system through challenging fights sounds satisfying, that friction may be part of the draw; if you want consistently gentle progress, it is a reason to be cautious.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- A strong fit: Players who enjoy turn-based, tile-based strategy, party-building and a politically driven fantasy narrative.
- Approach with caution: Players who expect action-focused Final Fantasy combat or want a consistently gentle difficulty curve. Padoan’s review specifically identifies difficulty spikes as a drawback, while praising the story and combat depth; he also notes voice-acting and camera frustrations.
Padoan reported spending more than 50 hours on his review playthrough, which covered the full main story plus a healthy portion of side content, errands and random encounters. That is his account of one playthrough, not a typical completion-time estimate.

For players who want tactical battles, substantial character customization and a political fantasy story, yes. The two versions let you choose between Classic’s original presentation and Enhanced’s updated interface, voice acting and conveniences. If what you want is action combat or a smooth, consistently forgiving difficulty curve, this is a less certain recommendation.
